K38 is a higher build then 36, also a higher solids primer so it shrinks less!

K36 is a more popular product because it has more uses then K38. K36 depending on how you mix it it can be a regular surfacer, tinted surfacer or sealer. K38 CAN only be used as a regular surfacer, CAN NOT be tinted or used as a sealer.

I like K38 primer over k36, thats just my opinion. If i do want a tintted undercoat Ill first use k38 for build up then spray on k36 tinted as surfacer or sealer

Thanks sevty, If I go with the K38 to build with, what should I use as a sealer before shooting the Deltron 2000 base? K36 with the sealer catalist or is there a better option for sealer? If I go that way will a quart set up be enough fo a complete since sealer is only one coat?

Another can of worms what is PPG K200 primmer? Just read about it in the "rust never sleeps" tech article

K200 is a urethane two stage primer/surfacer. I like it a lot, but am going to try the K36 because it can be also used as a sealer. I havent used K36/38 so I cant compare the K200 to them, but K200 fills and sands well.

My PPG supplier recommended DP50LF w/ DP402LF catalyst for etching (applied over bare metal and plastic filler) and said I could use my Sherwin Williams 2 part urethane primer surfacer over that (I had a gallon and a can of hardener that I bought last year). They said I could then seal it with the DP50LF w/ DP402LF "thinned" prior to base coat/clear coat. Apparently the DP50LF allows some flexibility as opposed to the DP40LF which is extremely rigid (so they told me).

If want to seal the car prior to painting just so you know its not a NEEDED step. Some guys want to seal it others dont like me. Either way is fine.

I use k36 mixed as a sealer at work, it works good. The mix ratio is 4;2;2;1, 4 parts k36, 2 parts DMD or DCC tint, 2 parts reducer and 1 part DCX8 hardener. A qt of k36 for the sealer will do. Just a rough guess on my math but you will have a tad more the 2qts RTS product when mixed.

Also you can get k93, which is a clear product. You can use it as a sealer or surfacer. Because its clear when you add the tint you'll get a closer color to your tint added as you are not fighting the gray. I have used this product only about a time or two when used as sealer so I really cant say much about it.

Am supposed to getting some new high fluting sealer that PPG is coming out with, when I try it Ill check back if I can remember.

Never used K200. The epoxy primer from PPG is NOT an etching primer. The only products in the Deltron line from PPG that are etching is Dx1791, DPX171/170.

You need to be careful of using that epoxy as a sealer. Epoxy is a slow drier and if you apply paint TOO soon you'll get dieback. The solvents are still escaping from the epoxy and you topcoat with paint you are trapping those solvents in and dieback will occur which is the loss of gloss. Of course this can happen with any product but it will happen more often with epoxy. Thats one reason I really dont care for epoxy when used as sealer.
