: Ding repair
BAD415 Feb 11th, 04, 12:01 PM The other day I overheard my wife say something to the kids about "everybody gets out of the car before I pull into the garage". I said to her, "somebody hit my car with your car door didn't they" she said "yes, just once". Today I pulled the cover back to find not one but three dings in my quarter panel.I'm so mad I'm gonna **** fire! I have my car on dollies, and have it moved plenty far (so I thought) over so this wouldn't happen. I suppose it wouldn't had happened if she'd learn how to park in the garage. I have a tennis ball hanging, and all she had to do is line it up with the rearview mirror. Is there any way I can have these dings removed? It didn't chip the paint or anything. I just finished a 3 year restoration in september last year, and drove the car a whole 5 times. Now its all beat to hell...Im so angry.
Atlast Feb 11th, 04, 12:36 PM I just read in a magazine about the Paintless Dent Removal System. They claim to be able to take out some dents without damaging the paint.
You might see if there is a person using that system near you.
rbarnes Feb 11th, 04, 12:47 PM I can imagine how mad you are. I don't know how I would have handled something like that. I was building a custom Harley in my basement (walk out). I hadn't worked on it a couple of days, so I went down stairs and opened the door only to find water and white spots all over the bike, floor, tools and $3500.00 paint job. My billet aluminum parts were starting to corode. What happened was the my youngest daughter plugged up the toilet in the bathroom above my work room, well all that toilet water was down stairs. My wife uses those bleach tablets in the toilet and thats what caused the corosion of my parts. I know my story won't make you feel any better about your dents but your not alone. I did have some dents taken out of my new truck with one of those paintless dent remover guys. The guy did a great job you couldn't tell there was dent when he was done. I'm not sure how it would work on older cars with the thicker sheetmetal. You can find these guys in the phone book or go to your local car dealer, they use these guys all the time to fix new cars. They need to have access to the back side of the dent. It cost me $40.00 a dent. I wish you the best of luck.
I bought a couple of sheets of foam insulation board from Home Depot and set it next to the car. Their pretty light and easy to store when I'm not using them.
A few years ago I had $900 (traditional body work estimate) in hail damage to a '95 Pontiac Sunfire. Must've been 20 dents in it from softball sized hail. I had a paintless dent removal guy repair it. When he finished I couldn't tell where any of the dents had been except one on the A pillar. IMO the way to go for that type of dent.
Bill Rose Feb 11th, 04, 4:07 PM After it's repaired, you want to be sure it doesn't happen again. I would put two covers on the car with a layer of something like foam between the covers where the doors might hit again. With kids or anyone else walking between the cars you have to be careful. I have a 6 foot wide area to walk past my 68 and I still worry about it. I'm also the only one who pulls cars in and out of the garage. My wife leaves her car outside and I pull it in. It's a hassle but it's easier than repairing the paint on the Chevelles.
70chevychevelle Feb 12th, 04, 4:40 PM rbarnes, i do the same thing i got 3 sheets of pink insulation board 4'x8' x 2" thick ( we have extra after insulating the outside of foundation walls so i kept a few) and lined them on the entire side of my car after i put the cover on. U could throw a brick at them and still not damage the car  . Its a very cheap investment. expecially if your car is in a tight storage space with alot of people walking buy
Jblack Feb 13th, 04, 6:51 AM That's why the only thing allowed in my garage is my car! I told the wife, you can do whatever you want in the house, but the garage is mine. I'll scrape her windows, etc.
I have a friend that does the paintless ding removal. As long as the ding is not in body line, they should be able to get it out.I'd get out the Yellow pages and check around.

Scott72 Feb 13th, 04, 10:52 AM If I remember correctly, this mouths issue of Car Craft has a whole section on paintless dent repair (and also an article on replacing quarters on a 67 chevelle). Don't feel bad, I have a 66 Chevy stepside with 40K original miles that was being kept at my parents house. My mother decided to back it out of the garage to make space for some flowers and proceded to sideswipe the whole passenger door on the side of the garage.
