I have a 68 chevelle with a TH 400 and i'm going to change out the converter this week. Can anyone link me to a site that has some step by step on how to remove the trans? Any help would be great.

It's late right now, I'll give you the info tomorrow. If changing the converter is all your after, it's possible to cheat a little, like keeping the driveline yoke in the tranny the whole time so you don't have to drain the fluid.

If it appears I spaced you (no follow up post), I probably did. Feel free to PM or email me through TC

Thanks. I need to change the torque converter and the front seal. I dont know where the seal is. But if i can cheat then i'll do it. Thanks again.

remember when installing the converter you will need to push it in and turn quite a bit before it is fully engaged in the more than one set of splines. it may go in farther than you think it should but when you bolt to the flexplate you can move it back out enough to start the bolts.

So noone can help me with how to remove my transmission?? I've looked at all the tech articles and have searched the web. I know there has to be somewhere with a "how-to".

copper.
i'm doing the same this weekend.
remove shift linkage or cable.
disconnect speedo cable.
disconnect cooling lines.
disconnect downshift wiring.
remove flywheel dust cover.
unbolt TQ from flywheel. 3 bolts?
remove dipstick but leave dipstick tube in place.
disconnect vacuum modulator hose.
remove driveshaft. if you have another yoke put that in place. otherwise get a butt plug from the local trans shop, so you don't lose all your fluid.
remove bolts from trans mount to crossmember.
support trans with jack. place a board under the trans pan first.
raise the trans enough to remove the crossmember.
lower the trans and keep an eye on how close the distributor comes to the firewall.you may have to support the motor.
remove the bolts that hold the trans to the back of the motor.
slide the trans back and down.
pull the old converter out.
remove the front seal and install new seal.
install new converter as explaind above.
reverse procedure to install.

hope this helps.

pour a quart of trans fluid in the new converter before you install it.
and grease the input shaft on the converter where it slides thru the front
seal.

david

p.s. be careful lowering the trans out of the car so that the dipstick tube stays. if not, you will lose quite a bit of fluid.

Drain the transmission first, then you wont have to worry about losing fluid and the transmission will be lighter too. I get to pull mine out tomorrow night or Saturday, been blowing fluid out the vent and flexplate looks like its from Arkansas, missing some teeth :D
