: Magnetic rod bolts???

Hey all,
I was checking my bearing clearances yesterday and noticed that two rod bolts were slightly magnetic. The end cap would stick to the end of the bolt. So I tried a screw driver on each, and sure enough, the end of the bolt is just a little magnetized. Not enough to hold anything, but enough to notice. They are ARP bolts.
Am I crazy? Is this normal? How could it have happened?
Thanks,
Danny

Sounds like the rods were magnifluxed and they didn't fully remove the charge.I have seen that before, I used to mag. them when I worked at the machine shop.

Danny,
It is a lot more common than you think. Not sure what causes it. I have taken apart completely stock engines that have never been touched and found some rods so magnetized that you can actually pick up the cap with the rod ! It could also be caused by what "dunno" mentioned. I dont like putting them back together that way. Take the rod to your machine shop and have them pass it through the magnaflux machine and demag it.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the responses. I didn't think about it possibly holding onto some metal debris. Thanks, I'll get them de-magnetized.

With todays ultra hipo ignitions magnatized metal pieces inside an engine don't really surprise me.

That said, the engine block sure should provide pretty good shielding.

Its a mystery :)

The engine probably makes more power, with better fuel economy, with magnetized internal parts! ;)
