How deep should the fan be in the shroud? Right at the edge of the shroud or deeper (closer to the radiator)? Which way cools a hot engine best?

Several people advised me (while I was shopping for a better cooling) that the fan should be half in and half out of the shroud. I will tell you that I had a stainless shroud made that my fan is completly inside, and the car runs really cool now. Make sure the shroud/fan pulls air through the entire radiator. That is vital.

Not overheating anymore....

Ive always read that the fan blades should extend about 3/4" into the shroud.

I have heard anywhere from 1 inch to 1/2 inch inside the shroud. About 1/2 or 3/4 of the fan blade should show.

On those early cars the fan shroud should cover 75% of the fan.

I've heard a bunch of things from several racers and radiator guys. Most of the advice I got falls into the following summary. Fixed or solid blade type fans should be 2/3 to 3/4 of the way inside the shroud, flex fans should only be 1/3 and up to, but not more than, 1/2 way into the shroud because at higher RPM's the blades flatten out, and if they don't stay outside the shroud partially, they can cause turbulence and let less air yet through the radiator.

Well, from what I've read here it sounds like I need a fan spacer. The fan is even with the edge of the shroud and it runs pretty warm, even in this colder weather.
Anyone know who sells spacers to move the fan into the shroud about an inch? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

You can get all different length spacers off of other cars in the bone yard, although I doubt that brand new ones can be that expensive.
