Along time ago, on my 64 Elky, a "mechanic" had replaced an alternator. To get the alternator charging he ran the #2 regulator wire to the positive side of the coil. The wire should be run to the R terminal on the alternator. Does anyone know what he was trying to accomplish? This was done over 25 years ago and has not caused a problem that I know of. The #2 wire I understand should only deliver 3.2v to the regulator. I am currently restoring/improving the vehicle and would prefer the wiring to be correct, not just running the car.

He just didn't know what he was doing. Wonder what else he did to get it charging??? How much was the car driven in the last 25 yrs?

It was driven daily for 3 years about 10,000 per year, after that about 1000 per year. That is the only abnormal wiring I have located. I take it I should change it back though?

I would, or convert to a internal regulated alternator. If you change it back, make sure the charging system is working, measure the voltage across the battery terminals, should be 14-14.5 volts.
