: POR-15 in engine bay
7DSS Feb 26th, 04, 2:09 PM I planned on coating the inside and outside of the fender wells, firewall, and inside of the fenders with regular POR-15. My question is, this stuff is real glossy, and I'm questioning how it will look when finished. I know they sell a chassis black top coat, but is it as hard and scratch resistant as the base coat? Thanks.
Randy Mosier Feb 26th, 04, 4:39 PM It will depend on how you want the engine compartment to look. I've done one of my inner fenders in the regular black and it looks great. The chassis black will not be as glossy.
ccarney69 Feb 26th, 04, 6:46 PM I'd go with the POR 15, yes it's real glossy but it gives it a smooth clean look also.
kamino69er Feb 26th, 04, 8:47 PM I used Por-15 in my engine bay and finished it with Eastwood underhood black. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I have used a lot of POR on my car. I like the POR Flat as the the Semi-Gloss is really glossy. Too much gloss looks too much on a big area like the inner fender.
I did my inner fenders (both sides) using the Flat POR-15, but I did smaller pieces like brackets and the hinges in semi.
Just looks right. :D
7DSS Feb 27th, 04, 2:52 PM Thanks for the replies. DG, did you first coat with the regular por-15, then topcoat with the flat black?
Professor_SS Feb 27th, 04, 3:55 PM I used Por 15 on my firewall and the first time a little brake fluid got spilled on it it bubbled/crinkled all up and took it right off.... Just for your info... keep brake fluid off it despite what the manufacturer claims.
There is a POR-15 that Is flat black instead of Semi-gloss. It usually $1-2 cheaper.
So, I used nothing but POR-15 flat black.
7DSS Feb 27th, 04, 6:16 PM Not to run this into the ground, but I'm still a bit confused. I guess I thought the base coat (available in black, semi-gloss, silver, and clear) were the rust preventative paints, and the others (like chassis black) were forms of topcoats. The last POR-15 quart I ordered was just "black" and is real glossy. From a previous reply, DG noted a Flat black, but I can't seem to find it on their website, and the semi-gloss POR-15 is glossy too? Thanks.

The standard black and silver are the rust preventative coatings, while the chassis black is considered a top coat.
New68SS Feb 27th, 04, 9:56 PM I used the POR15 Semi-Gloss and then top coated it with POR chassis black. It looks perfect!
I put two coats of the POR Semi-Gloss as directed.
I too have spilled brake fluid on it and the fluid didn't budge it. Even after sitting on it overnight it wiped right off.

Rust Bullet Feb 28th, 04, 12:58 PM POR-15 Gloss ratings are as follows.
POR-15 Black = High GLOSS or Very Glossy
POR-15 Semi Gloss Black = Just as it says
Silver = Semi Gloss
Grey = Semi Gloss
For the topcoats the only differance is the Gloss factor
CHASSIS COAT BLACK = SEMI GLOSS
BLACKCOTE = Gloss Black
I use to be a POR-15 dealer smile.gif
7DSS Feb 28th, 04, 3:17 PM Thanks for the help everyone. So it appears that I can just use the semi-gloss POR-15, and skip the topcoat. Thanks.

Dwayne Hmmm, I spoke to soon. I was just under there last night and saw that it had in fact blistered where the brake fluid hit it. graemlins/sad.gif
