: 69 Chevelle emblems

On the back of my car, inbetween the trunk and the bumper is a spot that has 8 holes in it. The best I can figure it is individual letter that say "C-H-E-V-E-L-L-E" Because, Chevrolet is one leter too long. My friend brought up a good point also, it could be one long piece that does something like this.... _Malibu_ With little prongs at the ends of the 2 lines.

My best guess is it says Chevelle, but I have a Chevelle book, and it doesn't have individual letters, or letter that are connected that are long enough to go across.

What could it be?

Is your car by chance a 300 series (non-Malibu) Chevelle? The 69 Malibu has no emblem on the rear end panel. For 68, there was a "Chevelle" emblem on that panel, and it may have been there on 69 300 series cars. Does the VIN of your car start with 136, and is the 6th digit a 9? If you list the entire VIN it might help solve the mystery.

What is a 300 series Malibu, or a 300 series non-Malibu? I know it was a Cali car if that helps any.

Nick, those holes might be for the moulding clips. There are two mouldings that run across the back between the taillights.

There is only 8 of the holes, and there is only one line of them. They are also right in the moddle of the panel. I was looking in one of my books, and that 69 didn't have holes, or a molding on it.

Nick, it was just a guess on my part. I have two 69 malibus and both have two mouldings going between the taillights. they are held on by 8 plastic clips each

It doesn't make sence though. Are they right smack in the middle of the panel? Cause this is where these are.

Are you sure these are factory holes? I dont know of any 69's with just a emblem or script in the rear.(maybe 300 series?) Is the rear panel stripped so you can see what the metal looks like, any thing from inside the trunk look unusual in there.

Your car decodes as a 69 Malibu 2-dr Sport Coupe, which would have no emblem whatsoever on the rear end panel if it was not an SS. And in that case you'd have holes for the "SS396" emblem, but not in the orientation you describe.

So my guess is that someone added a non-original emblem at some point in time. The only other explanation I see is possibly a dealer nameplate (like "Yenko"! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif), so don't fill those holes just yet! Good luck with your mystery.

By the way...is there a site online where I can plug in my VIN, and see where my car was made, when...ect.? I think it would be interesting to see.

I'll try to get some pics in a few days, I'll keep yall posted.

I can be pretty sure its not a Yenko, they only used a emblem with two holes and a 427 emblem with two holes.

The Z in your VIN denotes the Fremont, CA assembly plant. Not aware of any sites to plug in the #, but you've found out everything that you can from it at this point.

I have seen some 68,69's that have a long skinny emblem in the middle of the panel. Kind of like a squashed V. It could use the eight holes.

I saw those too in one of my books, but they are connected together, and these holes are spread too far apart to be connected.

Thanks for the info. on the VIN. I knew it was a Cali car, but it is cool to know where it was made.

136379Z326549 Could also be a 69 SS since there are no special numbers for the SS option in 69.

How far apart are the holes?

The SS has two molding strips across the back that run from tail light to tail light with the SS emblem between them.
The upper molding is approximately 5/8" and the lower one is about 1 1/4" tall
Both are held on with tabs through 8 holes each.
The holes are not round but elongated and would go pretty much all the way across the back with one row above the other.

I don't think it is an SS. It says "Malibu" everywhere, and has a 350. So, I guess SS is out of the question. I feel kinda bad for stupifying almost everyone. lol But I'm almost as lost as alot of yall are.

In looking at a '69 dealer brochure, the 300 Deluxe (non SS) didn't have any moldings at all between the tail lights. The Malibu, as others stated, had horizontal moldings at the top and bottom of the panel between tail lights. Both the Malibu SS and 300 Deluxe SS were identical in this area with the Malibu type horizontal moldings plus the SS396 emblem centered between moldings in the middle. The holes in question must have been from a dealer or owner added molding. Can you tell if the holes were drilled or punched?

Yall are probably right that it is from a molding. There are 8 holes, the middle 6 are elongated, and the end ones are round. And it was closer to the bottom than I thought it was. Sorry I confused everyone. lol

Is there the 8 holes on the top of the panel also? If you've got the six that are oval, and two that are round, that is exactly how the factory did the tail-chrome holes on that body. If you've only got one line of holes though, maybe someone filled them in since you should have none, or both, but not just one line.

Also anytime you've got mystery holes, check to see if they have been punched (perfectly smooth) or drilled (rough and not as precise looking) this isn't a exact science, but can help sometimes. They punched holes in the factory, and we drill em when we're adding baja lights in the garage. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
