Anybody know what wheel/tire combination I can use on the rear of my '67. Would like to get 10" slicks under it but I'm not sure if I can.

Just as a reference... we bought some swap meet wheels to mount a 28 x 10.5" ET drag on my son's '72. The wheels measure 7" from inner lip to inner lip and have a 4.5" backspace to the inner wheel lip (outside edge of the wheel lip). I know for a fact they fit all the way around under the car. I mounted them to take to the muffler shop to pull the tailpipe slightly away to provide full clearance. They fit perfect.

A '72 has alot more room in the back than a '67 does.

A '72 has alot more room in the back than a '67 does.Yes it does. beginning with 1970, Chevelles had more room under there than the previous years did.

64-67 Velles in general had much less room the the later years. I had posted something similar in wheels and tires. Several folks have massaged the inner wheel house and the fender lip to get wider meats in there.

I'd like to know as well. My 2 door could use some slicks or drag radials and my wagon only has 255/60/15 on the rear because it has a 68-72 12 bolt which is a little wider.

with 4.5" backspacing 9" fits, you will need 5" b/s to fit a 10" tire and hope you dont have 3" tailpipes!

I have 275/60/15 on my 66 with 15x8 wheels. it would only rub if you let off the gas to fast when the car gets sideways.

What diameter on the 9" I've got 2.5" tail pipes.

I have 275/60-15 Mickey Thompson drag radials on the back of my Chevelle and they fit great. The fender lips are rolled. I have also run 295/50-15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on the back with 4.5" back spaced Wheel Vintiques Rally wheels, no sweat!

The key to tire fit is rolled fender lips and 4.0-4.5" of back spacing on an 8" rim.

Good luck :D

Forgive my ignorance. What do you mean by "rolled fender lips?"

Forgive my ignorance. What do you mean by "rolled fender lips?"It's what I had done to mine too. The fenders have lips on them that reach inside towards the tire as much as 1.5 or 2" on some cars, and that will often be the first thing that the outside side wall of the tires will make contact with.

So you can have a body man roll them back atleast an inch if not more which places the extra metal that's there flatter up against the inside of the fenders, or you can buy a device to do that yourself ( kind of pricey though), or you can even resort to what is called the old "bat trick" where a baseball bat is placed on top of the back tire between the tire and the fender lip, and you drive the car a few feet to push the lip back. I cannot say that I ever tried the latter method though. I think that most guys have this done right before the car is painted during the bodywork phase like I did. But however it's done, rolling the lips back will enable you to use a wider tire.

I see. I don't think I'm willing to go that far. I avoid body work like the plague. It'll be due for a paint job in the next few years. I may do it then. For now I may just try a 28.5x9's w/4.5 or 5" back spacing. Thanks for the info.

For now I may just try a 28.5x9's w/4.5 or 5" back spacing. Thanks for the info.Just a little heads-up for ya....5"-5.5" backspacing seems to be the absolute most that you can use even with the 70-72 Chevelles, and like it's previously been stated, they definately have more room uinder there than the 67's do.

And many guys who use 5.5" backspacing with their 70+ Chevelles, end up having to take a hammer to the inner walls of the wheel wells. So my guess is that if you don't want to have to do that with your 67, then the most backspacing that you'll be able to use will be 4.5". But ofcourse the best way to determine that is to get under there, and measure how much room that you have with a tape measure between the inside wall of the tires at their widest point, to the wheel well wall, and then take the wheel and tire off of the car, and measure the backspacing ( I think the stock B/Sing is 3 3/8") .

Then you can just add to that figure whatever distance there currently is between your existing tire sidewall, and the inner wheel well wall ( minus perhaps a half inch for comfortable clearence) and that should be your maximum B/Sing. I hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.

How do the M/T drag radials hook?

How pricey are they and are they on an 8" rim?

Thanks
Rob

ROB , yes they are mounted on 8" rims . I havent had a chance to take it to the track.due to a couple little bugs still trying to work out. but the little bit i have drove it on the steet they seem to be great.its not like driving on marbels like the old set of b/f goorich i had on there for the maiden voyage:eek:

Heres a pic of mine with the 12.5"x28" Et Streets. Now that i've lowered the back they are actually too tight to drive safely without some modifications to the wells... you shouldnt have any problem with the 10" width, and with the right suspension work you will hook!

I run 7 inch rallys and I run a 275/60 15 for the street and a M/T ET Street 28/ 11.50 for the track. No rubbing issues with either. I have tried the M/T's on 8 inch rallys and they did come closer to rubbing.
