: Finally got my permit
chevelledude71 Jul 4th, 06, 12:44 AM I went last Friday and got my motorcycle permit. I was so relieved to finally get it done. I filled up the motorcycle today and it only took $9 with Plus being used. It was a relief to fill up and not have to break a 10 :)
I put the most money in gas in my Chevelle Sunday before I drove to the drag strip...$39 and that topped it off...I know 'cuz I spilled gas. I hate that too!!!
Anyway, I went earlier in the day and bought a helmet and a "riding" jacket. Not a leather one, yet, but I will get to that in a few weeks. :)
Cameano Jul 4th, 06, 4:48 AM  Stay safe on that bike, Wally. Have fun, too. ;)
68KMENO Jul 4th, 06, 5:10 AM MY I make a couple of sugestions on riding gears ??? first off leather isn't the best way to protect your hide!!!! the new cortex balistic nylon jackets offer much better protection & have insertable protection pads in elbows shoulders & other high inpact area's.... next come's the helmet buy the BEST one you can afford !! I wear a carbon fiber one & it gets replaced every couple of years.... I 'm tellling you these things out of experence.. there are only two kinds of riders in this world.... the ones who have crashed & the ones who are going too !!! If you're wearing the right gear you'll probbly walk away to ride anther day ......
webfoot Jul 4th, 06, 7:00 AM As a fellow "crasher" I can say that 68kmeno might be right!
chevelledude71 Jul 4th, 06, 11:41 AM Gents,
Thanks for the words of wisdom and I will adhere to them. The DOD has mandated that we take a motorcycle safety class and it's mandatory before we can even ride on base. Then we have to have on long sleeves, reflective vest (orange, yellow or green), pants, gloves, boots and a full face shield. I don't have the vest yet, nor the boots (only hiking boots), but I will get a respectable pair because I don't want to ride with my military boots; they won't match anyway ;)
As far as the riding jacket w/inserts, where do you get yours? I'm sure they sell them around here, but sometimes the online stores have better deals.
Thanks again guys. :)
Freddy Mercado Jul 4th, 06, 11:43 AM What kind of bike did you get???
chevelledude71 Jul 4th, 06, 11:47 AM A 1980 Honda CB750F SuperSport (yes it's a real SS, I checked the vin# :)
I wanted a Harley, but I had a chance to buy my "old" Mustang back. So, I bought it back and paid off 2 credit cards, built a deck on the front of the house and bought this used M.C. I like it, and it should last me a few years until I want another one. Well, until I want a Harley that is :)
Aaron Jul 4th, 06, 12:55 PM Cool!! I have been looking at getting one for commuting reasons. I also want a Harley. Something small maybe a sportster or low rider.
animal69 Jul 4th, 06, 1:05 PM Just remember "SHINEY SIDE UP"!
1BLACKHARLEY Jul 5th, 06, 11:43 AM A 1980 Honda CB750F SuperSport (yes it's a real SS, I checked the vin# :)

i'm a harley guy, but i gotta tell you, those old honda's are basically bullet proof. keep the carbs. synched, and an eye on the cam chain tensioner. they are great bikes, and with modern rubber on them, are a blast to ride. i had it's big brother, a 900, and i still kick myself for not keeping that ride.....
Harley is right on the Hondas. My buddy bought a '76 750 a couple of years ago. The first summer he had it he rode it 2K miles with little more than a change of tires. They just run and run. I was out with him Sunday and we put about 150 miles on them just cruising around the side roads of Indiana.
Dan72 Jul 5th, 06, 1:05 PM My brother loves his 750 Intercepter ('86ish?). I learned on a smaller Honda of that year, it WAS bulletproof, was a great little bike.
chevelledude71 Jul 8th, 06, 1:55 PM I rode about 2 hours the other day and stopped to check the gas and get a drink. It's really hot wearing all that gear...I felt like I was in Iraq :)
UNFORTUNATELY...the Alternator went out (I think) and I couldn't get it started. So, it's at the shop right now, but at least I got a few hours out of it :)
I'll be back on it and riding around checking out the fine ladies at the beach in no time...uh oh, my wife is coming...gotta go. :)
Freddy Mercado Jul 8th, 06, 10:00 PM Enjoy, I'll be there soon and maybe we can ride together.

Sounds like a plan, a buddy down the street (former Marine) will be going along for the ride too. He already told me anytime I can go ride...he can too.
I'm looking forward to it. Let me know when you get into town. If you need anything or any help with anything, let me know. PM me and I'll give you my phone number. I go on leave the 13th-24th of July though. But, I will be back in the area on the 21st though.
