: My attic is INFESTED with spiders!!!
dirtrocker Jul 2nd, 06, 3:04 PM Went up in the attic today to get a few things and spiders everywhere!!! Given my location and looking at pictures online I'm convinced they are brown recluse spiders.
Does anyone know a good way to treat or get rid of these? I've bug bombed the attic yearly, and every year there seems to be more??
Found this online, but I'm skeptical http://www.belnapstore.com/searching.asp?cat=Home+%26+Garden&subCat=Spider+Control

theclencher Jul 2nd, 06, 3:50 PM I know from personal experience that you DO NOT want to get bitten by one of those little *!
-SS454- Jul 2nd, 06, 3:53 PM The common house spider looks very very simular to the brown recluse spider, and also simular to the "hobo spider". You mention they are in the attic, and i know the common house spiders are more common to cool, damp areas like basements. theclencher is right about brown recluse spiders though, when you get bit their venom eats your flesh, and if you do get bit, you need to get medical attention right away.
79943 Jul 2nd, 06, 4:13 PM personally i would call in an exterminator for that type of deal. they know just what to use and they have access to WMD's that the average homeowner cant get. just in case they are recluse or fiddle backs you really dont want to mess around. bring out the big guns!
chevguy65 Jul 2nd, 06, 4:36 PM Call Terminex or someone qualified, do not try it on your own.....ever watch the movie arachanids?....bbbbbb gives me chills

pdq67 Jul 2nd, 06, 10:56 PM All I know is that my big-headed B-I-L, a neighbor Lady on the farm back when I was a kid and a Buddy that I worked with on the old RR wife's back then all got bit by the nasty * and lost FLESH!!
NASTY SOB's!!
My B-i-L's foot, the neighbor Lady's chin and my RR Buddy's wife ALMOST lost her ARM!!!

hoffbug Jul 2nd, 06, 11:15 PM Yes bites can happen... But the total training that a doctor gets on insect bites in his 8 years of schooling is a 30 minute powerpoint show! Read the Rick Vetter stuff... Its real actual research. Start with this link..

Kevin, We have the BR spider in my area and have been told that no chemical will kill them in fact the exterminator said only regular household spiders can kill them. Do not have your house sprayed as it will kill your household spiders. I have been following this advice for more than 20 years now and I never see the BR in my home or any other pests either.
69300deluxe Jul 3rd, 06, 12:06 AM You possibly got your family to think about, like these guys said Dont even mess with them, call in the big guns. Even if they turn out to be harmless house spiders - better safe than sorry.
bluechevelless Jul 3rd, 06, 12:35 AM If you bug bomb the attic you will just run them down into your house. Weve tried bombs before and they usually dont do anything to the spiders but just run them out. Ive never found a dead one after bombing.
dirtrocker Jul 3rd, 06, 3:38 AM I figured the same thing.....bug bombing would only run them down into my part of the house. Heard the same thing about not being able to kill them with pesticides. Moving isn't an option at this moment. Not sure paying an exterminator is even a good idea, I'm sure they'll take my money..........but not sure they can even do anything beyond filling my house with chemicals.
I'll have to try to get a pic of one of them.
Chlordane was onna the best but it's long gone nowadays..

Hot66ss Jul 3rd, 06, 4:32 AM **** that **** man, call the exteminator
That's some nasty *!!!! I hate spiders, and it gave the chills just to see partial pics of those things. After seeing those partial pics (from not uploading), I'm kinda glad I've got dial up :p :D :D :D
Aren't recluse/violin spiders suppose to be more poisonous then black widows? Then how in the heck can normal house spiders kill them?
All I know is that if worse comes to worse, and you're thinking of moving, now's the best time to spray them all with gas and light those suckers up!!! :p  :D :D :D
pdq67 Jul 3rd, 06, 7:44 AM I have a brown jug like that but the label came off years ago!! Probably has about an inch of Chlordane in it from way back about '76 or '77 or so..
I would sure like to have a new jug of the stuff to work the foundation over for anything and everything that crawls!! GREAT poison, imho!!

PCB67SS Jul 3rd, 06, 8:49 AM Here's the fix....If you live in Florida or visit you know we have alot of bugs and pest. A few years ago I was turned onto a product by my termite guy. It is sold on line and thru DIY pest control places. It will kill Brown Recluse spiders and any other thing that crawls. I spray once a year around my house foundation and attic and soffit vents and no more bugs....PERIOD. It is Demon WP....its not a snake oil type of thing...It does the job. I just checked on line and prices have dropped since my last purchase to a little over 10 bucks for the 4 packet envelope. You just rip open the foil envelope, pull out 1 cellophane packet, drop in sprayer add the water (1 gallon) in the sprayer. The water will melt the plastic wrap....shake and spray.
Adam Loose Jul 3rd, 06, 8:58 AM Just get a few geckos or something similar that will eat spiders, and let them loose.

Daddy long leg (dont know the real name) are some real poisonous SOB's its just that their fangs wont pierce our skin. As I understand it they can whack other critters with ease just not us. This is why I leave them be or set them outside when I come across them. Good friends to have around the house.

I"m pretty sure that is just a myth about the daddy longlegs being really poisonous

Mythbusters BUSTED that myth. There venom is not very strong at all.
Xtreme70SS396 Jul 3rd, 06, 8:55 PM Well, killing whatever the spiders are eating will certainly help. They have to have a big food source for there to be that many of them.
dirtrocker Jul 4th, 06, 7:19 AM Well, killing whatever the spiders are eating will certainly help. They have to have a big food source for there to be that many of them.
I completely agree. It is SOOOOOOOOOO hot in my attic, can't be any source of water except for from what they eat. Doesn't seem like a pleasant place to live.
Over the lasy so many years I've COMPLETELY gutted my house also, replacing most ceiling joists and all drywall and insulation. Must be something they like up there because their population must be thriving.
Think I'm going to try a product mentioned earlier. Read a bit on chlordane, don't think I'll ever be using that.
Thanks all!!
Kevin

pdq67 Jul 4th, 06, 1:22 PM Yes, a 2" to 3" long Praying Mantis is a very neat bug!!
Aggressive little buggers too!
They will fly around in the latter part of the summer looking for bugs to eat!!

chevl71 Jul 4th, 06, 3:26 PM Hit them with the good stuff. Don't mess around with bug bombs, it'll only **** the spiders off. Then they'll have an attitude
Junkyard Dawg Jul 4th, 06, 11:44 PM Aren't recluse/violin spiders suppose to be more poisonous then black widows? Then how in the heck can normal house spiders kill them?
Not sure if they're really more poisonous than a widow or not....but if you've ever put a spider on another spiders web, they'll fight. Seems like usually the owner of the web comes out the winner. Maybe that's what was being implied?
One things for sure about the recluse....when they attack their victim their venom turns the prey's internals to liquid.....same thing happens when they bite you....it's scary to think someone lost their foot due to a recluse bite.
One thing I have to wonder.....if you get bit and immediatley seek medical attention how much longer does the wound continue to grow? From the looks of a few of those bits it almost looks like they purposely let them get that infected.
-SS454- Jul 5th, 06, 12:08 AM I wouldnt say the BR spider is more poisonous than a Black Widow, at least in terms of life threatening. If I recall correctly the black widow attacks the nervous system, and its venom is powerful enough to be fatal to some human's, perticularly small childs. Adults its not usually fatal, just painful, and makes you pretty ill. However a BS spider's venom is probably more dangerous in the sense how fast it eats your flesh, and the fact you can lose limbs makes the damages very severe.
I know someone that got bit on the leg by a BS spider, and immediately went to the hospital, they put her on some steroids or something. It still made a divit in her leg, but as far as I know it healed up fine. You need to react pretty fast if you get bit.
RobsIron Jul 5th, 06, 12:17 AM Kevin, Spend the money on a Professional Exterminator. Your time is valuable..let a pro deal with them...especially if they are Brown Recluse. This isn't a time to 'save money'. As you said..the keyword here is "INFESTED".
If you happen to have some chlordane..spray it around the foundation of your house..you'll never have to worry about termites. It was banned in '87...any house built after has to worry more about a infestation.
As far as the spiders..a exterminator doesn't cost a lot. Let them handle it and you..kickback.
Beaux Jul 5th, 06, 12:49 PM Mythbusters BUSTED that myth. There venom is not very strong at all.
Ahh, good to know. I refuse to watch ANY show that is hosted by a guy with a funny mustache that likes to wear a beret so wouldnt of caught that. Thanks though, news to me. Wait - do you have a funny mustache and wear a beret? If so, I cannot listen to you and have to keep on rolling with the belief that its true.
:D

gspan1830 Jul 5th, 06, 8:43 PM I'm still waiting for the pic. I wanna see just how bad and how many there are.
79943 Jul 5th, 06, 8:52 PM get a couple dozen praying mantis and put up there
i saw a PM take out a large spider one time when i was a kid. it was pretty ugly. the PM literally jumped into a spider web and shook it like ....oh i am sooo stuck....then, when the spider ran out, he just lopped off the spiders legs with those pincers, chowed down on the torso....then proceeded to jump out of that web like it was a trampoline. the PM is definetly the top of the totem pole in the insect world. but back to the issue at hand, i really would look into an exterminator. they really arent that expensive. in the deep south you HAVE to use them. there are bugs down here that must be thirty years old (not enough frost to kill them off in the 'winters' down here) judgeing by the size of them. we have roaches down here that vote and run for office. LOL.
dirtrocker Jul 6th, 06, 6:42 AM I'm still waiting for the pic. I wanna see just how bad and how many there are.
I never even left my pulldown staircase. Saw 5-6 of them from there and several, what I thought were eaten mates.............but read online were shed skins.
Was aware there were some up there from the past, but not that many.
I'll try to get a pic or two tonight if I have time.

Dear Kevin,
I'm a television researcher working on a series called Infested! for Animal Planet. The show is broadcast in the US and internationally. The series tells the stories of ordinary people who have been plagued by extraordinary infestations in their homes and each story is told through personal testimony, interviews with experts and dramatic recreations.
I read this post about your spider infestation and am keen to find out more details about what happened. Would you be willing to have a chat about it over the phone?
I appreciate it's a bit strange to be contacted in this way, but we find comments on forums are a great source for interesting stories. Please rest assured that Darlow Smithson Productions are an award-winning television company with countless hours of high quality factual programming for all the major networks, including Animal Planet, National Geographic, History and the BBC. Feel free to check out our website at www.darlowsmithson.com

SMALLBLOC Mar 4th, 11, 5:15 PM Years ago I bought a '66 nova, it had been sitting in a field, later in the garage I noticed webs everywhere,BLACK WIDOWS!!.probably 20-25 came out of that car. They are common here, you will find them when changing tires, shocks, etc. Just wave a torch around to burn them up.
I would throw some chemical bombs in the attic in your case.
