When I got my 'velle, it was column shifted. The factory harness already had a socked for the adition of a console harness (neutral saftey switch, back-up lights, and console lighting). This car has been wrecked twice that I know of and has been owned by at least 4 other people before me. I dont know what was original to it (other than the #'s matching 12 bolt). Did all Chevelles have the adapter for the console even if it was originally column shifted?

Some did and some didn't. The console harness is really 2 harnesses, console extension harness, and console harness and neither are present in a column shift car. Console extension harness plugs into dash harness and has plugs for NSS, reverse lights and console lighting. The question is weather your dash harness has the plug for the console lighting. This plug would have three wires - orange, white, grey. See this post for more on console wiring.
