I have three holes on my rear end. When I bought the car the stud was in the middle position. When I change the shocks ( Edelbrock IAS) the shocks did not sit right on the middle. I since changed them to the lower and the car sits level but the rear end bounces more ( Alot more ,I am hittting my 275-60-15's on bumps). I think the springs are shot and I have a set of Moog 6201 on the way.

I am not sure if the rear is an original 66 rear. I could not find the codes on the axel.

You guys that have 66's Where are youre shock studs mounted Top, Middle or bottom?

My 66 has the original 12 bolt and there is only one hole for the shock mount not three.

Should only have one lower mounting hole...could the others been previously drilled for some reason?
Got any pics to post?

Thanks Rick . I figured that the rear was not original.

So I have 3 holes. The springs have a pigtail on the botom where it connects to the axel and it is flat on top where its sits into the spring pocket in the body. The pigtail sits on a raised "square" on the axel perch. This square keeps the spring in place. Any Idea about what kind of 12 bolt I have ?

I am sorry some more info. It measures 54 1/2 from plate to plate. The perch is not a raised square it is a raised circle there is a a hole in the cirlce about 1 1/2 - 2 inches.

I will try to get some pictures bill

I had post about my rear when I first got the car it seems I have a 1968 rear. Did the 68 have three holes?

All the 68-72 rears I've seen have just one hole. Even the BOP rears that have 12 bolts on the outside and a 10 bolt ring gear that I've seen have only one hole for the shock stud.

If anyone gets a chance. I could use the measurment from the top of middle of the axel housing to the centerhole on the shock mount. Or from the bottom of the axel housing( top of the barcaket to the center hole.

It seams that I have some kinda mutt for a rear end.

The car had air shocks when I bought it. I figure they had the rear jacked up 60's style

Extra holes are probably from the old 'trick' to raise the rear end. I remember 'long ago' dropping the rear end, placing a 'can' of tubular steel for the spring to sit on. Drilled a new shock stud hole higher on the support.

Results was that the car was 2 - 3 inches higher and the ride was the same.

60's stuff to rake the rear end. Easy on a 67 because of the spring perch, not sure on a 66 but probably would have strapped it down.
