: Do spray can primers work? Any tricks?

I'm trying to do the body work on my car. At school I can use standard mixed primer, but if I want to do some work at home, I don't have the equipment. Is there a brand of primer in the can that works for automotive and if so, are there any "tricks" to make it work right.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Current ground up restoration in progress: All parts brand new except rear end: GM 350 crate motor w/ Weiand dual plane intake & Holley 600 cfm carb, K&N exhaust. Doug Thorley Headers w/ Flowmaster pipe & exhaust. Rebuilt transmission from A1 w/ shift kit & 2500 stall converter, Hurst pro-matic II shifter, 15" Powder Coated , Chevelle SS steering wheel, combo oil/tranny cooler, , ARP bolts everywhere.

Project almost done-at this point-wish I had the resources and space to do a frame off. Anyone take the frame off before in a standard size garage? Now that all the new parts are in except radiator, it wouldn't be all that to tear down again. Hmm….

I've used plasti-kote primer surfacer in a rattle can for some small areas.

If you use them, sand it off before you use the real stuff.

I would do the work at home and wait till school to prime, unless it rains i would wait and take a break. ALMYPAL39 suggestion works good too, use it as a guide coat until the real stuff.

You could use a product like Spies/Hecker 3255, red-brown etch primer. It's available in a spray can and is an excellent protection against rust for up to 6 months. Use that first, then at a later date, scuff and apply a urethane 2K primer.

Thank you for your suggestions-I just needed to know that I could at least have a temporary "fix" until I can get set up better.

Thanks again!
