I'm taking the vinyl top trim off of my car and I was wondering, how do you remove the little metal buttons that hold the plastic retainers in place? Do they just break off, or do I need to take a die grinder to them? I plan to paint the top to match the lower body, so I need to smooth out the body where those little buttons are attached.

I would cut em off and then grind flush, taking care to do a little at a time and not overheat the metal. I have been able to break them off flush sometimes, and other times they come out and leave a hole in the roof..easy to fix with a mig, but then you have to do the grinding thing anyway.

The other option is to put the chrome back on after removing the vinyl and painting. I've seen a few cars like this, it looks good.

Hi Randy, while repairing some rust on the lower section of my elky, I noticed that these tits come off really easy with a grinder (same style used on vinyl top trim). If you have to replace them, you can get some small sheet metel screws at your local autobody shop that can be used to hold the clips in place. Good Luck
