Hey all, have a MIG till next week and I've wanted to take out my door handles, well there already off but it would be VERY helpful if I could get my hands on some pictures of someones project or tips on doing so. I've heard so many different ways of doing it. The sylander install and beeper to open them will all come later, I just want to do the outter work for now. Let me know what you have! Thanks... If you've never had a shaved handle car, you had better sit down and think real hard before doing it.
There are plenty of reasons NOT to do it;
1-extra body work.
2-extra electrical wiring
3-the solenoids sold in kits are generally poor quality
4-the mounting hardware in kits is always poor quality and it NEVER fits your application w/o modification
5-in order to get in the car with a failed/lost remote, you need a momentary button outside the car (this means MORE wiring!)
and only 1 reason to do it;
1-it looks cool
IF(!) you really want to shave the outside handles, consider leaving the lock cylinder and modifying it to rotate/pull the rod to lock/unlock the catch INSTEAD of using solenoids.
This is just my humble opinion after having owned a car with shaved handles.
This was back in the day when the output of an alarm was used to activate a switching (latching) relay, which in turn energized a momentary button mounted inside the mirror housings next to the door. When the alarm was armed, the relay was "tripped" and the buttons were de-energized.
I lost my A$$ when I sold the car because of this "extra feature". graemlins/clonk.gif

Personaly, I wouldn't do it either, but to each his own. What I would do if I had a shaved handle car is to air brush some fake handles back on it to really freak people out!

haha, airbrush on fakes... I can imagime that! Yeah you guys are right Ive heard alot of horror stories. I replaces my passenger side skin and never put back on my handle. Would it be strange to shave out just the pass. side?

Personally shaving one side and not the other side would look stupid. Sorry but it would.
Another safty feature that Ive seen done to shaved doors is run a cable to the door latch to the outside of the car. If anything happens to the battery you pull this cable opening the door. Guy in town has a 40 chevy coupe, cable run under the running boards. Boss's 46 ford convert the cable is tucked up in the frame right under the rocker.
Shaved handles would be LAST thing Id ever do to a car...Eric

A guy I've known forever in town is building an old panel truck and he shaved the handles and then put the latch in with a frenched antenna operating it. You just pull up the antenna and the door opens. He used latches that put the striker pin on the door and the latch assembly into the door frame. The doors on that thing are actually quite thin where the latches would go.

I shaved mine........as soon as they start making new skins for my '80 Malibu it will have handles again :\........never let a friend talk you into stuff like welding up the door handle holes on your car....ever LOL
it does look cool but damn its a pain in the hiney.....I've gottne to where the only time I actually roll the windows up is when I'm not within sight of the car if I take it anywhere
when I put handles back on it they'll be the late '90's Caddy Deville handles though :D
Peace
