: Need 496 tow motor advice

I need some recommendations concerning my 1986 Chevrolet 454 crewcab engine that I have to pull a 42 foot gooseneck with my Chevelle inside for the farther away events. Total vehicle weight with truck car and trailer comes to approximately 17,000 gross pounds. It has the stock peanut port heads on it and 157,000 miles and is in relatively good condition and has been well cared for. UD Harold listed a UD towing cam for such an application that I would like to install along with headers, intake manifold and carb change. My questions are do I need to keep the exhaust rotators with this camshaft because of the towing factor? If I decide to rebuild this engine and install a 4.25 stroke crankshaft for more pulling torque will that change the camshaft recommendation? Does anyone have a combination currently running/towing that they would like to share? Any help would be appreciated.

Harold say's this one is a dandy for a work 454 motor!!

272/272 112 .515/.515 217/217 The best cam for pulling trailers, car-hauler or boats. Excellent bottom end and mid-range torque. Works power accessories. 1600-5500.

I first bought an Erson;

1,750- 5,000 rpm, PN E120320, Hi Flow AH; 284/220, 111/111, .542" lift torque hy-cam for my 454 after running I don't remember how many through D2k..

The dreaded, "more power, Scotty" bug bit me and I went 496 and a good old CC 282S solid cam for like 550hp at 5500 rpm and 580t at 4500 rpm!!

New oval Merlins, 9.8 motor, 750 Holley on a single plane Strip Dom. and 1.75" 4-tube, long headers is all!! I call her my great big "tow-truck" motor!!

I hope this helps??

if you're going to do the 496 thing you really need better heads. Chevy oval port open chamber or any aftermarket will make a huge difference on the 496.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will start looking for some 781 or 049 castings and ditch the rotators. Now do I need to consider the 2.19/1.88 valve upgrade for these as well?
The Camshaft listed at 515/515 is the cam I would like to run that Harold recommended.

Mike Lewis, I want to buy a rotating assembly from you for this project. (Aren't you a Scat dealer?) What would you recommend? Thanks!

Would the cam Harold recommends pass California emission test ? I'm looking to upgrade the cam in my 76 454 GMC truck for better pulling (car and trailer) .
