Actually you should be sanding the clear if you have a basecoat clearcoat paint. If you get color when wetsanding then you have a single stage paint job, usually solid colors. If you have a lotta dirt in your basecoat it can be sanded lightly but on metallics another coat or two of base must be put on to hide the sand scratch scratches. If you are sanding clear it needs to be buffed to take the scratches out. A little more info would help. Mike

Finish up your sanding with 2000 grit. It will look terrible when you are done. You need to polish it before it will shine agian.

Yea, i started with 1500 (the paint wasn't completely terrible) and then ended with 2000 but now i don't know what compound to use and what is the best way to apply it. Thanks

Use a medium compound on it with a buffer. I use the wool pads. Just squirt a little right on the paint and start buffing it. It takes some experience to buff but your not going to get it without trying. Don't sling your compound every where by heading into your compound with the buffer spinning fast. Don't buff INTO an edge, only buff OFF edges or you'll burn the paint. You will need to change pads and buff it again with a glaze to remove the swirl marks. Do a search on buffing and you'll find all the answers you need.
