: Protecting Trunk Spatter Paint

I completed the restoration on my 66 Malibu about 5 years ago. Like a lot of people I sprayed the trunk spatter paint from a can. Being a water based paint I covered it with Truck and RV Clear to try to weather protect it. My trunk is fairly dry but sometimes gets wet in a heavy rainstorm if I get caught in it. The spatter paint gets mushy and soft. Obviously, the clear coat is not doing the job. I do not want to strip the trunk and start over. What clear coat can I put over this to protect it? I want a hard durable water resistant finish.

Bob.. My advice, and not what you want to hear I am sure... Strip all that Can stuff out, and spatter paint with ZOLATONE. That way, you do not need to clear coat it and won't have to do it again ... ever ;)

Zolatone is not a spray can spatter.

Thanks for the reply, but surely there is something I can spray on or brush on to protect what is already there. Basicaaly I just need to do the floor of the trunk.

Bob..Mike's right. There is no better advise. There is nothing that comes in a spray can that will achieve the results you need. The spray can spatter paints are no good, especially if the trunk is going to get damp/wet. The spray can spatter does what you described. It melts when it gets wet. and NOTHING you get to cover it will help. I'd take the time to sand, scrape, wire wheell the entire trunk then spray it with Zolatone thru a gun. You won't get the results your looking for any other way...

Well, it may look unusually shiny under your trunk but faced with the same problem, I might do this as an alternative.

I've been there with the splatter paint, the stuff sucks. I'm going to be redoing the trunks of both cars with Zolatone by the end of the summer....hopefully.

Where can you get Zolatone? Can you spray it with your average spray gun.

Zolatone has about 50 different colors. They will send you a color chart if you call and ask for one.
It can be sprayed thru pretty much any gun.
I can't remember the exact cost but it was about $50-$60 a quart...

Just my experience, but I tried getting the correct black/aqua Zolatone from a local rep and none of the colors looked like the factory 1970 trunk paint. The closest was a black/green mix but it didn't look close enough for me. I ended up spraying DP90 as a basecoat, followed by about 1/2 can of the GM spatter paint after 1 day drying time. I let it dry for a week and sprayed PPG clear, very grainy (I turned up the air feed on the gun) so it wouldn't dry with any gloss. Worked great for me, and the finish is indestructable!

I believe the one most people have used is Onyx Black 20-71.

The correct color would be onyx-black 20-71. It's as close to original as your gonna get...

graemlins/hurray.gif I love a post that just keeps going and going and going :D

20-71... No Clear Coat needed.. and worth wasting $50 of spray cans... Can you say YARD SALE ;)
