: Edelbrock performer vs Dart pro 1
1960LesPaul Jun 27th, 06, 9:05 AM Alright I decided to get the aluminum heads for various reason and decided on the Edelbrock. A friend said he talked to a local engine builder and said NOTHING flows better than these Dart pro 1 heads out of the box. He said if you want to get to 550 to 600 horses these heads are the way to go. They are pricey at 2600.00 vs 1800.00 for the edelbrocks. The price is not a problem IF you all think its worth the extra bucks.
I am installing a steel crank and rods. 11 to 1 forged pistons. Roller rockers and 600 lift cam. Holly 850 double pumper with 3 inch exhaust. I was told that the Dart heads would be killer on this motor. What do you all think? I also got an offer to trade my car but that is for another post.

cstraub Jun 27th, 06, 9:14 AM If this is a BBC and you have the choice on new heads then a Dart Pro 1, Brodix, Canfield are all excellent choices to make good power right out of the box. A good person to talk to in Louisville on making power is Carl Houchin at Houchin's Automotive over on Taylorsville Rd.
1960LesPaul Jun 27th, 06, 9:18 AM Yes CS it's a 454. I will talk to Carl. Thanks for the heads up.

jbird Jun 27th, 06, 9:26 AM While I wouldn't go as far as saying nothing flows better out of the box, the Darts definitely flow more than the Edelbrocks. Obviously, it's all about the combination though. If you have less than 500 CI, and this will see any real street driving, I would stick with the 310cc version. Have you checked on AFR's or Canfields? You might be surprised on the price. It seems like the 310cc Canfields are less than $2k? Brodix RR would also be a decent head for most street/strip 454 based engines. There are many choices out there, don't limit yourself based on one opinion.
1960LesPaul Jun 27th, 06, 10:31 AM OK CS I spoke with Carl and he said that the Darts would be his choice for my application. So now I have 2 builders telling me to go with the Darts. It looks like I got to dig a little deeper. lol
Natural Born Killer Jun 27th, 06, 11:50 AM Bought my Canfields through Performance Products. $1499.00. I have flow data on 40 sets of heads and the out of the box Canfields flow slightly better than AFRs for a lot less money. Edelbrocks dont flow near as well. My Canfields work great on the street too. Just my .02.

You have flow data from where?
There is no way a Canfield is going to "outflow" an AFR of comparable size on the same bench under the same conditions.
If you have flow data on 40 heads on the same bench under the same conditions do share but if you are comparing posted or magazine numbers unless they are all done together like the CHP test a few years ago they are about as useless as tits on a boar hog :D
Might want to talk to Ron (Ron 454) or his friend Mike or Ron's engine builder on the merits of these two heads,, they both seem to be making pretty decent power with the AFR's & this is the smallest of the AFR's at 305cc's & they are not $2600.
At least not from me they aren't ;)
If you are looking for an "out of the box" head they flat works you will be hard pressed to find one that will outperform the AFR in an apples to apples comparison for the money.
If you were looking for a smaller port my choice would be the Brodix RR as it will just kill anything out there in an oval right out of the box.
Natural Born Killer Jun 27th, 06, 12:49 PM I race with Ron and Mike they are good friends of mine. But they both have larger Engines and lighter cars than I do. I agree that there is no way to accurately conpare things unless done on the same flowbench under identicle conditions. And at the time I bought the Canfields I was looking at AFRs but the price was just to steep for me then. The numbers I have for the Fully CNC ported AFRs are better than the Canfields and even Canfield told me that AFR had a better Combustion Chamber. I basically was just throwing out a viable option with a lower budget in mind.

Knew you guys were friends, that is why I mentioned them ;)
And the heads I am referring to are not the fully CNC ported ones, they are the 305's with the CNC chamber option
The fully ported ones are a "bit" more money :D
Doug F. Jun 27th, 06, 1:26 PM Which ones does Ron have? Fully CNC, or just chamber?
If just Chamber, all I can say is daymmm.
Natural Born Killer Jun 27th, 06, 1:33 PM Ron has out of the box with just the cnc chambers. Not the ports. Oh yeah, I guess I am supposed to call him 9.90 Ron now.......

The Arkansas family tree is a wreath.
Only steers and queers come from Texas and you dont look much like a steer to me.

I live here ......but I was formed and grown in Philly..............and yes....... I am a damn Yankee! :D: :beers:
Bob West Jun 27th, 06, 8:30 PM When you throw the small port 270cc Brodix RR Oval into that spread sheet it don't compare too badly against heads with much larger ports ;) The exhaust flow is down considerably compared to the AFR's though. I think the Brodix RR oval would be an excellent head choice for your 454.
chevydog66 Jun 27th, 06, 10:08 PM I'd go Dart, but I'm kind of partial.
