: Removing Aerosol Paint Overspray from Body Panels
Shawn Sep 11th, 00, 3:11 PM A previous owner on my car tocuhed up the (black lacquer)paint on my car with a spray bomb and there is some overspray (light to moderate) on parts of the body that shouldn't have it. Is there any way to get this off with chemicals, buffers, wet sanding, anything? The paint underneath is nice and this makes it look bad.

RagTop70 Sep 11th, 00, 3:48 PM Dampen a rag with paint thinner and wipe off the overspray. Don't drench the rag or you may wipe off more than you want. This worked great on the parts of my grille that I didn't want painted.

Shawn Sep 11th, 00, 6:58 PM I tried it and I need something stronger. Any other ideas?
66rat Sep 11th, 00, 7:07 PM Shawn, I would try a small spot using either a cleaner wax or rubbing compound by hand first. If the spray bomb ate into the lacquer then you'll have to get a little more aggressive. You can use a buffer with some compound. But if its really bad then you will have to wet sand it, followed by a complete buffing and polishing. When it gets to this level and you have a high dollar lacquer job, unless you know what your doing you might want to seek a pro. Personally, I wouldn't touch lacquer with any kind of thinner, no offence RagTop70, Rob
Shawn Sep 11th, 00, 7:17 PM I wasthinking about taking her to an auto detailer just to do this and get the paint shiny. Think they could do it?
Redrum Sep 11th, 00, 7:29 PM Try Goof Off...... Yellow can at the hardware store. Test it on a small area first. After using wax heavily.

70Elky396 Sep 12th, 00, 3:17 AM I have used meguier's #2 and rubbed by hand to remove fizz can overspray from urethane finishes and had good results, but I've never tried it on lacquer. Perhaps someone can expand on this.
I've heard that a clay bar will remove overspray.

Shawn Sep 12th, 00, 6:36 AM What about heavy overpsray where it covers entirely?
MARTINSR Sep 12th, 00, 8:09 AM Sounds like the only way you can do this is to sand it off with 1000 and 2000 grit and then polish it. The BIG prblem will be not to sand though the paint you want to keep.

Tom Lasater Sep 12th, 00, 6:18 PM Please try the clay first! I got overspray all over my "Formal" Chevelle and had to tell the man that painted it what I had done. WOW! He finally forgave me and got it all off using clay (like clay magic). I couldn't believe how easy it came off.
