: Tow package in 1972?

I have a friend in my local car club that has a 2 door 72 chevelle with what appears to be a towing package. Does anyone now if there was towing package available in 72? The car was his fathers and purchased new, his father had passed away years ago. The car has a factory 3.08 Posi and a 3 core radiator with a 307, turbo350 with front Disc brakes. The car was purchased off the lot of a local dealer and was not ordered by his father. The build sheet was destroyed years ago. It also has silver seat belt locks which seems strange, car was made very late in the production year and was purchased in the summer of 72. Any ideas? Thanks.

Why would you think that this is a towing package? What you've described seems standard to me, I don't see anything towing about it. As a matter of fact, not sure if they would have used a 307 for any type of towing.

As I recall from waaayyyyyyy back then, the factory and/or dealer had a list of recommended equipment to be ordered if you planned on towing, but they did not have a specific "towing package". The list of equipment probably would have included HD cooling, automatic transmission cooler, HD alternator, HD suspension, and at least power drum brakes, if not power disc brakes. Unless someone was going to be towing something fairly lightweight, I doubt they would have recommended a 307 engine with a 3.08 rear axle.

I have to agree 100% with Bill. As I recall, and I DID special order a 72 wagon, there was not a "towing RPO", but several options, as mentioned, were recommended if a trailer hitch was part of the plan.
Today, you do NOT order individual options, there are "packages" and you get all the things that come in a pkg, whether you want them or not.
Back then, you could 100% tailor a car any way you wanted it, with or without any option you did or did not want.
I ordered my 72 Concours, 9pass wagon with almost everything in the book (and some things that weren't) and there was no trailering option. When I was done, in essence, I had an SS454 4sp, fully loaded with CI hood, in wagon skin. It was a struggle, but I did take delivery of such a wagon. And what's left of it still exists today in my son's back yard.

I am begining to think it was the end of the current 68-72 A-bodies and the factory just threw in anything they had left over and that would not fit the next generation (73). Maybe it has the seat belts from the 73 model year.
