: help with bad body roll in a 65

I need this fixed and I am not sure what is causing it. I have a 65 chevelle that is mostly drag race with some street driving. When I am making tight slow turns the car leans really bad and will almost pick up the inside front wheel. Going around curves with some speed causes a lean, but not nearly as bad or annoying as the slow sharp turn stuff. I do not expect this car to be corner carver, I just want it to behave okay when I am cruising.

Everything in the suspension is new. On the front - lightest moroso trick springs for my application, lakewood 90/10 with PST polygraphite bushings. Rear is UMI upper and lower dbl adj spherical rod ended control arms. Wolfe race craft bushings in the rear with stock springs and stock style shocks.

Thought about a front sway bar? The tall low rate springs will certainly aggravate your body roll.

I have definately thought about a sway bar - front and rear. I want to be careful though so I do not cause a situation that hurts 60 foot performance. I do not really want to be in the situation where I have to bolt/unbolt the bars when I get to and leave the track. When I upgrade my motor to something more serious, I will more than likely go with a weld in style anti roll bar setup, which I will have to deal with changing when transitioning from track to street.

Jim Hand has a little experience with A-body cars:

In our experience, removing sway bars do not improve traction, and in fact, cause the car to launch with one side of the body higher than the other. Front sway bars are not tightly connected to the frame, and thus do not inhibit normal rise of the front on acceleration. Leave them on and our car will launch much straighter! I also run a rear sway bar to try to keep the car level (side-to-side) on launch!

To get the front bar to move as freely as possible, use greasable poly bushings at the frame, and rubber bushings on the end links. This will be the easiest way to minimize any resistance the sway-bar may give to weight transfer.

I think you answered your own question-- no front sway bar, light springs, and 90/10 shocks.

I would not expect a front sway bar, even a large one, to do much to combat body roll given the spring and shock combo. It will certainly help but can only do so much when paired with super-soft springs and 90/10 shocks.

I'd try running the car with the front bar connected. If it detracts from your 60' times (it shouldn't, but if it does) you may want to consider sway bar quick-disconnects from the 4-wheeler crowd. When you get to the track pull the quick disconnects (30-second procedure) and zip-tie the sway bar ends to the frame up and out of the way of the lower control arm.

Thanks for the help and advice. I am going to try to find a cheap stock front bar. I have the poly bushings and stuff that came with my PST front kit. I want to see if it helps enough.

I ended up buying the Hotchkis front and rear sway bar kit. I put it on yesterday. It made all the difference in the world. The car feels so much better. No leaning in slow parking lot turns and no plowing through the curves.

I will post back when I take it to the track.
