: Clear coat question?

Hey guys, need a little advice here. I just acquired a 64 2 door wagon that was sprayed with a black base coat then had flames and hand painted pin stripes, then left that way to give it a rat rod look. Problem is the black base is really easy to chip and scratch due to the lack of clear and I'm sure it won't look good for very long. I like the flame job, it's not anything special but is well done and really matches the cars look. My question is could the black be touched up and maybe given a light coat all over masking the flames then a clear added on top? I know the best way would be to totally strip the car then start over but it's not in my budget or time allowance right now because I'm working on my convertible, but I would like to try and salvage the paint at least for a couple of years until I can get into restoring the wagon correctly. Any suggestions.

I'm also not sure which brand of paint is on the wagon (may be able to find out), but I was given a sheet of paper that listed what had been recently replaced and it lists the paint as base coated without clear.

I think you may be able to salvage it. Lightly scuff the flames with a grey scotchbrite then mask the flame job, then sand out all of your rock chips and scuff the rest with a grey Scotchbrite. Apply a couple of light coats of Dupont 222S and then apply two or three coats of black basecoat, unmask the flames, give them a light coat of 222S and clear the whole car. 222S Adhesion promoter has proven to work well for me reguardless of what brand basecoat I've used. I doubt you'll have any problems. Bob
