I had to use some epoxy putty to fill some small rust holes. I won't have access to a paint gun and compressor until May. What kind of rattle can paint can I put over this stuff to protect it?

Anything you want. Don't worry about the putty, protect the surrounding metal. POR 15 wouldn't be a bad choice. You can then finish with a top coat in May.
