Hey everyone, I was reading a week or so ago on here about the GL-4 and GL-5 lube for the Muncie transmissions. I decided to try the Redline MT-90 synthetic GL-4 lube that is designed for the older transmissions. I have a Supercased M-22 with a new roller 1st gearset from Auto Gear and I have always felt it was a bit notchy. I have always run the GL-5 as I didn't know any better. I took it out last night and found out real quick that the Redline did not work well at all! If I tried to shift fast at all it would grind and it got worse the hotter it got. The stuff was just too slick for the synchro's...anyway, I just put in some fresh GL4 lube that I found at Oriellys and I will see how that goes. Anyone else have any problems with the redline MT-90? Mark

Well I just took it out for a drive and it is still grinding pretty bad if I try to shift into second any faster than a easy shift....and I can just sense it is clashing a bit going into 3rd. 1st and 4th are fine. Second is bad. What is going on? This is with the standard GL-4 lube and I haven't made any other changes other than the lube swaps....

I have MT-90 in 3 Muncies, two Supercased M-20's and a standard M-20. They shift flawlessly, as fast as your arm can move. I've not had any trouble with the stuff, but I don't have a roller first tranny either, maybe that is the difference?

I use redline mt90 in my m20,no problems.

The redline mt-90 is specifically designed for our trany's,thats not the problem, the problem is with your car/trans.

What you desribe sounds like your clutch is out of adj or the trans shaft is getting hung up in pilot bushing.

Even though you think your clutch adj is correct adj it for more disengaugement anyway to see if it helps, and if yes you have have issues with clutch not releasing enough when pushing the clutch in while shifting.

I have seen this very thing happen with friends of mine in the past that swear the clutch is adj correctly when going by the freeplay spec for top of clutch pedal through.

As soon as i would put little more clutch release into the adjustment WALA the poor shifting issues went away.

If that doesnt work then it may be the trans input shaft being toot ight in the pilot bushing .

But even if your problem was just an adj issue at the time it could have gone far enough to cause damage to the trans causing the poor shifting your experiencing at this time so keep that in mind.

Or there was simply something wrong with the trans from the begining.

I have had real good luck with Red Line's MTL (Manual Tranmission Lube) in my old M21 and now my current B/W Super T-10.

I think it's a 70w80 lube. Makes for real smooth shifts.

I once tried changing from the Red Line MTL to Mobil One Synthetic gear lube and the tranny was very "notchy" and a little difficult to shift. Drained out the Mobil One and poured in the MTL. Right away the smooth shifting was back.
