: '72 chevelle 350 engine rebuild
dmccoy72 Jun 23rd, 06, 3:18 PM Im finnally rebuilding my 72 chevelles 350 motor! Im ordering a master rebuild kit from NorthernAutoParts.com and upgrading most of the components. Right now Ive got on my motor an Edelbrock 750 cfm performer carb, Edelbrock performer RPM air gap intake and headers. The rebuild kit that I am buyin will give me all of this:
-Either a Crane Energizer cam with 260 duration and .427/427 lift (#100032) or a Comp Cams XTREME 22/270 duration and .462/.469 lift
which do you guys recomend or would you recomend a different grind?
-clevite brgs
-Hypereutectic Pistons (flattop) # H345NP with 76cc heads (i dont know what i have) they should provide 8.24 compression
-moly rings
-a high volume oil pump with a high volume oil shaft
-cloyes double roller 3 key-way timing chain
-Felpro gaskets #KS2600
-frost plugs
- and a rebuild crankshaft with a 2 peice rear main
all of this is going to cost about 450.00 bucks going through N.A.P.
About how much Horsepower and Torque do you think this set up will give me? I also have the TH350 and stock gears. After The rebuild i will be swapping gears up to 3.73 or 3.42 but this may not be for a while. This car is my daily driver. Any comments or suggestions please?
BowtieAaron Jun 23rd, 06, 3:24 PM i had bought the same bottom end kit, but am using the cast pistons, and hastings rings.
i substituted all the cams for a comp XE268 (477/480 224/230duration).
i put down 268hp to the wheels, with an untuned carb, exhaust leak, and a slipping pwoerglide.
on a 350 with a stand bore and stroke, and 76cc 350 heads.
the cam i got has a little chopp idle, but pulls 16" vac in gear at 800rpms, and 19" in park at 1000rpms. and my car is a daily driver as well.

dmccoy72 Jun 23rd, 06, 4:35 PM any idea on what kind of times i could pull with this? not that i would be taking it to the track much, just curious
Jason Snyder Jun 23rd, 06, 6:07 PM Low 16s high 15s , Hey its just a cruiser , not a bruiser.
Slowpoke70 Jun 23rd, 06, 6:25 PM With 3.42 or 3.73, more like mid 14s probably.
My Malibu has an 8.3:1 CR 355. Beat up Hooker Comps, dual 2.5in Exhaust w/ flowmasters and over the axle pipes. 256/260 206/212 112LSA .420/.440 Comp Cams HE cam. Holley 300-36, Holley 750 cfm VS. Tuned-curve HEI w/ external coil. Stock heads(882s). Best of 9.5@76MPH in the 1/8th with a peg leg 2.73 on 235/60/14 street tires. That ET would be about a 14.82 in the 1/4. The MPH would be enough to net low 14s if I could get it off the line quicker.
So I think mid-14s is easily possible with a 350/TH350/3.73, especially with a modern cam like an XE or a Voodoo.
dmccoy72 Jun 24th, 06, 7:58 AM thanks guys, is there any thing else that you would recomend...like what kind of piston should i get, is the flattop good or should i go for a dome or dish with this setup and how much extra go would that give me
dmccoy72 Jun 24th, 06, 9:46 AM how much more/what would i have to do to get this car up to the 350/400 hp range? What are the best things i could do to increase my torque? My ideal ratio would be around 300hp to the wheels and gobs of torque for extra acceleration. Is there any thing i could change or add on to my set up for more torque and to reach this goal?
Bob West Jun 24th, 06, 9:49 AM 355 cubes,Vortec heads, flat tops,XE274H, RPM air gap, 750dp, my son ran mid 13's with 3.50 gears in his 82 Olds.
dmccoy72 Jun 25th, 06, 9:47 AM would you reccomend putting in the comp cams 268 cam or sticking with the 262/270 duration cam im thinking about? any insight on which brand of cam to go with?
Chirp08 Jun 25th, 06, 1:48 PM 268, if you cna get your compression up and better heads you'd be good.
If desktop dyno is even close to right, im making some decent poewr with my combo, and if deffinately feels that way compared to other cars in the 400hp range..

about how much toqrue would that give me? or how much do you have with that setup? what would you say my compression would be at with the setup i have chosen so far with the 268 cam?
Slowpoke70 Jun 25th, 06, 9:33 PM I ordered their relocation brackets on June 12. I thought that their stanadard shipping price was a bit much, so I expected them to get here in a week or so. Still not here. I hope they get here soon though.
Chirp08 Jun 25th, 06, 10:48 PM There was a popular hotrod article that had my engine, with a 262 cam, 3inch exhaust and 850cfm carb vs my 750cfm, they had vortec heads, i have trick flow, basically i had a better combo without too much carb or exhaust and they made 420hp and 435ft/lbs
this was all in a 9.5:1 goodwrench 350.
based off that and the goodwrench quest article you can easily get 400hp with a combo like mine and atleast 9.5:1
dmccoy72 Jun 28th, 06, 2:56 PM i ordered the kit and got the comp XE268/280 cam. What would putting on a 2500 stall converter on do for me? I thought that since ill have the engine out it would be a good time to put one on if had to or if it would benefit my application at all, i heard that some people recomend a 2500 stall with my cam but i also read that it can be ran with a stock converter. So, should i put in the extra stall speed and how much would that help me out? thanks guys
540Hotrod Jun 28th, 06, 3:45 PM I'd use whatever piston you had to to get compression up. 8.2 is just way too low to mess with. Plus most rebuilder pistons are WAY down in the whole and end up with lots of deck height. You can end up with less than 8.0 pretty easily.
Even if it takes a dome to do it, I'd get up near 10.0 if possible. If you are going to stay with the flat tops, budget some $$ for block decking to get it to *0* or even slightly above the deck. Typical rebuilder gaskets are also in the .042-.050+ range, so you lose even more compression. If you don't deck it, use .020 steel shim or some of the .015 Fel Pro head gaskets.
It's not much $$, but a stock oil pump with the HP spring will be fine. The HV won't really hurt anything at the rpms you will be running at....but it's not needed unless you have some pretty big clearances.
If you are getting another crank anyway, how much would it cost you to step over to a 383 stroker? They are pretty reasonable thes days and with mild motors that don't rev high..cubes are the best route.
Build a good solid shotblock..and then save $$$ for some better heads later on. THAT's where the real power is and you already have the other stuff to support it.
I'd check the Voodoo line of cams or the Crane 272's or the Comp 268H. Be careful of the Xtreme's..they seem to be a little hard on stuff.
Even with stock heads I'd be looking for .500 lift almost. Double check clearances on guide and retainer and get at least some of the rebuilder type Z-28 valvesprings. Also make sure rockers clear studs with new cam lift.

Wow, how did this end up in this thread? I made this reply to the UMI thread, lol.
dmccoy72 Jun 28th, 06, 4:45 PM well ive already ordered the kit and did get the comp xe268. the gaskets that i selected with the kit were felpros
dmccoy72 Jun 30th, 06, 2:27 PM would it be worth putting in a 2500 rpm stall speed converter into this? would that help give me any extra torque....and how much more would i have to do if i wanted to stroke this motor with a 383 stroker? what kind of power would the stroke add to my setup.
