I'm starting to work on the paint on my 72 coupe. All metal work has been done where there was rust.My car has one repaint of acrylic enamel over the the original lacquer.Which sander would serve me the best for removal of the second paint coat and feathering out filler or primer on repaired areas?Would prefer a U.S. made unit that is resonably priced. My car will be a driver and I'm not looking for a show finish type paint job, just a decent tool that will hold up and give good results.Any comments appreciated. A DA hands down is the most used sander in any shop, get the DA. In fact, I don't know of a single person that still uses a "jitter bug".

also unless you have a very large compressor, make sure you buy a good quality da. I have a cheapo 40.00 da that will barely
run off my compressor but my 20 year old Blue Point $$$ will run all day on the same compressor.

I would have to recommend an in-line sander. I find one of those sands things much flatter than a DA sander. I've done a lot of work without bothering to use my DA sander but I did use the in-line a lot.

At the shop I visit a fair bit (visiting the owner) they use about 3 different types of in-lines and 3 different types of orbitals. They range from the fast heavy operation to very light operation to go from initial work to finishing.

In other words, when it comes to air tools the same you can never have too many tools applies.

When I drove a tool truck about 6 years ago. The only DA that I sold in body shops was a Hutchens. I've got a Snap on and a Hutchens. The Snap on is good for rough work but the Hutchens is a much smoother sander.

Yes, I bought a used Hutchens orbital long board sander at an autobody closing auction sale fairly cheaply. It is a really nice piece and does operate really smoothly.
