prospective buyers who think kicking the tire gives an impression of the quality of the car, people really kick the tire and think they will get some kind of response from it

Most likely leftover from the days of wooden spoke wheels. Kicking the tire would have been one of the quickie inspections that could have been done. Kicking may have shown a potential problem with loose spokes or maybe even other suspension problems on the light early autos or wagons.

My dad told me about this years ago. It dates back to the earliest days of automobiles when cars were very simply constructed. He said you could give a tire a good, swift kick and it would make anything shake or rattle that was loose on the car.

So when you see an add for a vehicle with the statement "no tire kickers please"....are they telling you that you can't inspect the vehicle for obvious problems? Or are they simply saying "I don't want you knit picking my car and telling me how much I oughta sell it to you for"....

They mean they are looking for serious buyers, more like your second choice, not window shoppers.

They're really looking for someone that knows what they are looking at, what it's value is, and ir ready to make the purchase.

Similar to "no test pilots".

ie, don't waste my time unless you really are interested in buying. And no fullfulling your life's ambition to drive a 70 LS6 Chevelle under the guise of an interested buyer.

i wish everyone who doesnt have a classic car, but enjoys them, could afford to own one. He## i wish all of us who DO own one could afford it! and yes i agree with the posts above that "tire kicker" has evolved into the slang name for someone passing time by looking at a car with no real intent to even consider buying it.

This also includes those who'll call about a car, even though they have no money, or intention of buying it.
