Im going to attempt to do the body and paint on my 72' instead of taking it to maaco. I need someone to explain the differences in paint, like is laquer a single stage paint or is that enamil. I know what a b/c is just what are some advantges to using different paints. Because money is low and being my first job everyone i talked to said to do a single stage. The car does no get driven that often and is always graged. Thanks for any help.

Forget about lacquer, you can't even get it anymore (it is "legal" and can be bought but now at your "regular" stores). Single stage means that you have just color coats and no clear on top. Base coat/Clear coat is a as it sounds, you apply the color and then apply clear over the top. Both are available in lacquer, enamel, urethane and others. But the standard of the industry is a urethane base coat and clear. The base coat is not really urethane in most systems but the clear is.
Check out autobodystore.com for some great chat in the forum and the sight has a video tape for painting that I understand is very good.
I recommend the BC/CC it is very easy to apply and user friendly.

How much of a cost difference is between a single stage and a B/C system? Is the B/C forgiving is the aspect of runs, orange peel and other problems that may happen to the paint. I have a small garage and most of the prep work will probably done out side. This paint job is only to hold me over until i have more money and build a bigger garage.

1. Use BC/CC, I went the single stage and the color doesn't hold up as well.
2. Rent a paint both. I did and it was the best investment I made in my paint. Do NOT do the final paint in your garage. Honest.
That's my 2cents.

I totally agree with Francis on both his points. On the cost, bc/cc is more but there are many "budget" paint systems out there now that will give you a great paint job (no one would EVER know the difference looking at a finished job) where you can get everything you need for as low as $200.00 or so.

Thanks for the help. I guess i will need to go to the paint store and start to get prices on what the materials for a BC/CC will run me.
