: Dumb question maybe?
drums&cars Jun 19th, 06, 10:13 PM Should the parking brake be able to hold the car unassisted in neutral?
I replaced the entire system and from what I could tell everything looks alright, but the parking brake adjustment bolt is tightened to it's max and the shoes are adjusted out as far I could get them and it still won't hold. Any ideas?
zeke67 Jun 19th, 06, 10:35 PM Yes,
Sounds like the cable isn't the right length or isn't installed correctly.

Yup, I bought their kit and did exactly what the instructions say EXCEPT compare sizes to the long intermediate cable......which may be the cause of the problem(might be a little long).
But, just looking back at the diagram and thinking.....the large hook on my car connects right underneath the tranny mount, while the diagram looks like it's off to the side(and looks like a more logical place). Tell me if this looks right:

charbilly2001 Jun 21st, 06, 12:49 AM Look to the rear of the X-member on the floor pan of your car and you'll see a "box" section that runs from one side of the car to the other(maybe not the tunnel tho). In that "box" section you'll see holes , 2 on either side I believe , that are there to receive both "J" hooks that are used to properly tension your e-brake cable.
The transmission cross member is not part of your e-brake system.
Dean Jun 21st, 06, 1:06 AM Sure looks like there are more threads left for more adjustment in the picture.
I'm thinking the hook does go farther away from the trasmission mount (pretty sure it does on my 70 anyway) but that would make the problem worse wouldn' it?
Maybe you could fab a shorter hook but that woudn't be correct either..

looks like it's maxed out to me. perhaps you missed one of the hooks when you installed it?

elektryc102 Jun 21st, 06, 1:31 PM Charbilly 2001 is right about the smaller "J" hooks on each side of the under carriage, but the cross member is also part of the e-brake system, you have the big hook in the right position on the crossmember except on my chevelle the hook is hooked into a hole on top of the crossmember and the cable runs across the top of the crossmember before going up thru the floorboard to the pedal.

You didn't have to say it twice :D
I know my monitor really sucks because I've seen a lot of coments about things other people see in pictures that I can't see but arent these extra threads?

Dean Jun 21st, 06, 7:03 PM FWIW, It looks to me like the hole for the hook is on top of the crossmember about 5" to the right of the tranny mount on my 70.
I havent tried putting it in yet so I'm not sure though.

This will probably reveal that I haven't been under my car in a while, but to me it looks more like some kind of crimp fitting that attaches the threaded rod to the wire. Can't remember exactly what it's supposed to look like though.

Your right OLLE. the thread stops where the nut is and the rest is crimped around the cable.

here you go dean http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/IM000423-1.jpg
zeke67 Jun 21st, 06, 9:07 PM Dean is right, the hook shown in the picture is not in the right hole on the cross member. Indeed it needs to over about 5 inches. But it's further from the threaded cable, so it does not make things worse. The hole is on the top of the cross member as well, as mentioned. Basically, the intermediate cable should be very symmetrical -- the threaded cable adjuster is on the one side and the big hook is on the other.
Also, make sure you have the small hooks that were mentioned, one on each side hooked into holes on the floor pan brace. This will add a little distance, but mostly keep everything tucked up under the car.
drums&cars Jun 21st, 06, 9:33 PM Yes, the small hooks are deffinatly there holding onto the intermediate cable. About the big J-hook, I'll go take a look and see if I could find a hole on top of the crossmember(I put the J-hook back exactly where I found it when I first bought it.
And yes, the threads are maxed out on the adjustment slider thing.
*Edit* D'oh!!!! Found it........this'll work MUCH better, thanks yall.
zeke67 Jun 21st, 06, 9:59 PM No, the correct hole is on the top of the cross member. It's in a gentle depression if my memory is correct.
