350 sbc, new- voodoo 60104 cam, Sportsman 2 heads, team g intake, 750 carb.

My question is, should i do anything to the igintion? I am of course using new plugs wires and a new cap n rotor. The distributor is stock from a gm goodwrench crate motor. Should this be upgraded? Also, for the cap and rotor, what would be best, just OEM parts, or are there any upgraded parts that i should use? Thanks Josh

For ease of installation and maintenence and cost effectiveness, a Pertronix conversion to electronic ignition is hard to beat. If you have an inexpensive HEI available to you that is a good route to go. If that distributor out of the crate motor is an HEI run it! They are hard to beat for reliability and can be upgraded easily for not a lot of money.

The Pertronix in a points type distributor can get you better than HEI performance, however, for around $80 assuming you already have a good points distributor. I've had the Ignitor I Pertronix conversion in my SS for over 4 years now and I've never touched the ignition system since other than checking the timing now and then. Not having to mess with dwell is a nice side benefit not to mention I no longer have to change points.

If you go with an HEI, just make sure you wire it in correctly and it won't give you a bit of trouble.

In an HEI, the weakest link is the module. The stock module starts to drop dramatically above 4500rpm. The cheapest performance modules are from Accel. You can also buy a complete upgraded distributor for around $60.00 or so. I've ran the Pro Comp (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PROCOMP-SBC-CHEVY-HEI-DISTRIBUTOR-V-BBC-BIG-BLOCK_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33690QQihZ019QQit emZ8076525484QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)without problems.

If you are considering an MSD box then you can use a gutted HEI distributor (no module less headaches), You could also run a DUI, Davis Unified Ignition (is that right) distributor, which is basically a hopped up HEI. With the Sportsman 2's and a Team G you will need something reliable to 6500 at least. I would use a cap with copper terminals, probably doesnt matter where you get it, but NAPA always has good ignition parts IMO.

I use MSD products in my race car.
