I have a 1968 Chevelle SS without the original engine. It has a 4-speed in it. I am trying to figure out if it is an original 4 speed car. Was the hump for the shifter originally stamped as part of the floor or was it an added welded on piece? The hole in the firewall where the clutch rod passes thru looks original.

The humps were added by the factory. The numbers and date codes on the transmission would identify it an original for your car. There would be a stamped partial VIN on it that would match your car's VIN.

About the hole through the firewall for the clutch linkage. Do automatics also have them and are just blocked off?

I'm not 100% certain of this, but I believe the clutch pushrod goes through the same hole that the steering column goes through. The seal would be different or you would remove part of the seal for the different trans types.

The actual firewall hole is the same auto/man ... the left half of the bracket that holds the steering column to the firewall has the hole in it.

Factory 4-spd humps were cut, and welded into place at the factory (not stamped in).

Without looking at an actual factory car to compare, I think you would have a real hard time telling if the floor pan was original for a 4-spd. As noted though, if the tranny is original .. the VIN is stamped on the side.

Thanks, Neal
