Buy a clunker old 70s pickup. Usually you can buy the whole truck which will inlude bracketry/pulleys and all for less then you can buy just the motor.

put a ad on craigslist, I got two offered to me. One was apart and the other could be heard in a truck. Usually a little cheaper buying from a private party. And they don't want a core. Jim

I picked up a truck 454 (2B) with 4 speed truck tranny attached, off of ebay, recently. (private party). Investment was $350, plus a 6 hour round trip, to pick it up. It's now apart ... and looks like a good core. Hopefully, I can sell the trans, to off- set the cost. Previous suggestions are also good.

You might get lucky and find one in the boneyard if they've not already been snatched up. Seems like after 1980 it was mostly the heavy duty trucks and Suburbans that came with them as well as motor homes and school buses.

Before that, trucks, Caprice/Impala from 1965 up thru 1976, Chevelle/El Camino/Monte Carlo from 1966 thru 1975, Camaro 1967 thru 1972, Nova 1968 thru 1970......

You can buy them new thru Summit and Jegs.

My neighbor happens to have a few 402 blocks in his garage....you probably wouldn't want them because their 402's and not 454's....but they are good cores.

And of course ebay. Just teer clear of the specialty blocks like the LS6 or the L78 unless you want to pay some serious coin.

Thanks alot. I am determined to find one used. I know you can but them new but for $2000 for a plain cast iron block.

Try to find one out of a 3/4 or one ton truck as most of those are four bolt main. Probably won't cost you any extra, either.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a two bolt either, though.

Swap meets are your best bet. Just make sure to find someone who's willing to allow you to take the block to a machine shop to have it checked for cracks before any money changes hands.

I'm not that familiar with your area, but there should be some sizeable towns around where they have swap meets. How close are you to Carlisle Pa.? They have a huge swap meet there every year. It may have already come and gone, like I said, I don't know that much about your area and I don't keep up with the events in that area. But there should be other swap meets taking place all through the summer months.

Don't forget the super chevy show at Maple Grove in July. They also have a sizeable swap meet.

Imho, there are more 454 P/U motors than there are all of the other BB's combined.

got my 396 on ebay, it was in a 75 pickup.

auction ended at $1000, i got the engine (which is a 65 chevelle engine) , th400, radiator, and flowmasters from the truck. Then i sold the stripped truck for 300..

my experience at swap meets, the guys with big blocks tend to want alot, but theres always a deal to be found

If you can here em run before you buy 'em your probably better off. Thats what I did. Bought a running 'burban and scrapped the truck and pulled the 454, sold the tranny and etc. Watch out, the bell housing on a truck DOES NOT work for a Chevelle! It will bolt up, but the big hole in the center is too big, and from what I am told is just the start of your problems.

edited a couple for content, offers to sell parts.

please email/PM/use classifieds, several posts here answer the question asked without offering to sell parts. if your post was edited and you're mad, check the survivors and learn.

I've always had luck looking in small town ads. I live in Dayton Oh. There is this little town just South of here. There's a BB for sell in the Middletown Tell-it-and-sell-it every week. I bought a 75 pick-up last week with a 454 in it for $500. I drove it home. And all the brackets and pulleys are there. In a few more weeks the Chevelle will have the BB and the truck will have my old 350.

Chevy 70 SS vert,

They are fine b/c I know somebody that sells a spacer ring so our old Muncies will bolt up fine.

Read this that I saved...

"However, GM cast literally millions of the 460 486 bellhousing to cover the larger flywheel and clutch in 1970's light trucks, both 6 and 8 cylinder. The problem is the Muncie SM 465 truck transmissions had a 5 1/8" (5.125) front bearing retainer, so you can't use it with the smaller car transmissions.

Luckily, a 4 11/16" x 5 1/8" bushing is available from Novak part # BR-4 (about $40) at www.novak-adapt.com or 877-602-1500. His username is: dennymac

I bought one of the adapter rings, and used the truck bellhousing, which cost $25 at my local salvage yard, where they use the truck bellhousings for door stops.

The 486 dust cover is GM part #340 254."
