Ok guys I just need some input here, I just paid 400.00 to install all my seatcovers, and I supplied the covers I thought that was aliitle high but with foam and the rebuilding they needed I was ok with that price, when I asked him how must to install my headliner I just about fainted ??? 480.00 bucks with me suppling the material, From what I have heard they are a P.I.T.A to do but 480.00 seams way to much, there are not to many shops I trust with my baby so I guess I am asking if anyone has had it done and paid for it is the price in line ???????

Obviously, the guy doesn't want to do the job.
Cost about $100 to have a headliner installed around here.

Thats what I felt, I might be paying for making him do my back seat over ??
Is there anyone in the tri state area that had a headliner installed ?

I hope I can find someone to install one for $100!!!

The two shops near me want $600!

I was amazed because I know I can get one for around $100 plus misc trim parts. My headliners completely removed already. Like you, I'm a little leary of messing up a hundred dollar piece of cloth, but $500 for labor?

I'm glad to hear that I should be able to find a much cheaper shop.

Two years ago I had a head liner, vinyl roof, front and back glass installed for $300. I supplied the material. He does excellent work and is way cheaper than others in the area.

I am currently having a guy install my headliner in my 72 chevelle SS and it is costing me $300 (for him to install it, not including material costs). I heard it was a little high, but he's well known for his interiors and wins every interior trophy around. He knows people will pay it, so he charges it. I think it's alright he charges it because he does excellent work. This is around the midwest by the way....

I was recently quoted a price of $300 to install one in my '72.

I recently had mine done and he also did the visors and instead of running the chrome pieces(67) i had him put windlace on the edges. I supplied everything except the windlace and he even gave me new screws for the visors and of course he did the molding around the back window and the sail panels all for only 150.00 and it looks fantastic. So I would say 480.00 is a bit high. Just my .02 cents

If he has to do your back seat over, I can't see why you'd even want him touching your headliner.

I tell you what...it's not as hard as everyone says...it takes 4 to 6 hours..and costs about $50 to $70..that includes the glue. I did my own and it came out so well, my buddy had me do his in his mustang.
Basically you mark the holes that the rods are currently in. so when you put the new one in, it will fit. Set the new headliner out in the sun for a few hours to help soften it up.....Lay the old headliner with the rods still in it next to the new one on the floor. Then transfer the rods one at a time to the new headliner. Then I laid the old one over the new one and trimmed it close, but leaving extra!!!!...Then get back in the car and put the rods back in the holes they came out....take a break and have a beer.....now starting in the middle pull the front of the headliner tight and glue it to the metal. Moving from the center out towards the a-pillars. Then you do the same in the rear. The good thing is you can pull portions lose and adjust as you go. So if you get a wrinkle, just rework it. Once your happy with the front and back , then move to the sides and do the same thing.. You can use a hair dryer to help get some of the wrinkles out as you go as well.
When your satisfied with it, trim up the excess and replace the pinch weld trim and its finished..crack another beer and admire your work :beers:

I agree it's not that difficult. I did mine and it came out great. I used contact cement on mine.

Hey Jblack,
THANKS for that GREAT Tutorial, why pay someone anything , when you can DIY. That doesn't sound to tough at all! Just a few questions, when you glue, you only glue around the edges, is that correct? What kind of Glue do you use? What about the padding/insulation underneath, would you glue the Headliner cloth directly to the Padding, or maybe not install the Padding all the way to the edge leaving some metal exposed?

Thanks,
Bob

I just sent a third request for a quote and got the third price between $600 and $650 with them supplying the liner and pinch weld trim.

Maybe it's just a lot more expensive in the Seattle area?

I'm seriously thinking of trying this myself after reading the exlanation. I'm thinking (dangerous I know!:clonk: ) what about glueing the insulation to the inside of the roof after coating everything with POR-15 first. That would keep the weight of the insulation off of the cloth while I fight it to get it tight and maybe help prevent sagging?

I was aliitle worried about him doing the headliner after the mistake on the back seat, he also did the fronts and they came out fantastic, when I spoke to him about the rear seat he claimed his assistant did it, the guy made a mistake but he stepped right up and offered to correct the problem thats means alot we all make mistakes, it how we correct the problem after the mistake is done that really counts...I am waiting for a number of a old timer that does it out of his house and is reccommend buy lots of hot rodders around will see, but the way the price is jumping around it seams like people are just charging what they want , it maybe worth the price of the headliner to try it myself, the only bad thing is the old one was out before I bought the car, I didnt even know it was glued I though the moldings kept it in place :clonk:

How close are you to Maryland? There is a local guy here who comes to you to do the work and is usually about $150 - $200. He is located in harford county Md close to Shrewsbury / York area.

I supplied materials with a $125 headliner install (with adding new material on sailpanels and re-sewing of the sunvisors) + $125 vinyl top install by a competent upholstery expert. Came out awesome.

contact cement works great. They sell headliner glue as well. As far as the insulation goes (I didn't put mine in..but the mustang had it) Just glue that in place first. And yes you only glue along the edges.
And if you haven't re-installed your seats yet...all the better..Give you room to move around....

I had my son's done at KC upholstry(sp) in Odessa, MO. for 100.00, I supplied materials. He removed the old headliner(at his request) installed the new headliner, package tray(cut out rear defrost) sail panels and trim. Did an excellent job. Pete

Bill;

Does anyone make the trim pieces that hold the headliner above the doors? We have a set of used ones, and if we have to use them, how do we at least make them look fairly new/decent? If you go to our showroom, you can see the pic(s) of the ones we have.

We did our own headliner, and it turned out "Good", not "Great", but we were fighting all of the roll cage bars in the Elky.

Thanks for any and all info.

Hey Greg-
It is definiietly more expensive around here...

A while back i had a link to a website that showed detailed pics of the whole process on a camaro. Looked fairly straight forward. They used a whole bunch of those big black metal paper clip springs to help hold it up as it dried.

i'll see if i can find it and post it.

I usually charge a bill to install one...depends on the car to though...some B&C headliners are more work then others...

I usually spend 4-6 hours on installing one so that is about 15-25 per hour...a little low ball actually compared to the rest of the automotive industry hourly rates...mechanics and bodymen make what??? 50-75 per hour???
