What does an engine suffix code of "CE" mean, it's on a 396 block. I'm not sure of the year.

Thanks

CE = Crate Engine or Chevrolet Engine, used on 1968 and up warranty replacement engines.

CE - Chevrolet Engine (it denotes a service warranty replacement, not over the counter sales).

AND, could be a block change, a fitted block, or short block, depending on the extent of the damage. Chevrolet re-used all the good parts off the original engine, and only replaced the damaged section.
