I have read earlier posts on this but have a few questions. I am working on 70 conv. with freshly painted window area & new glass. When I purchsed glass I also got new butyl ribbon & ureathane sealant. The glass guy stated that the new law says that windshields must be ureathaned in to keep from popping out. You use butyl as a dam & sealant around outside edge & higher than butyl so it squishs down. Now this stuff dries kind of hard, do you think this could cause windshield to crack latter on as conv. bodies tend to flex? Also this stuff will pretty much fill the channel, isn't this a bad idea. And he also said I need this special ureathane prep cleaner which I can't seam to find in small quantity, Just the ureathane primer. Which he said I don't need because it's new paint & there is no bare metal, true? The guy at the body supply said to just use prekleeno,or acetone as prep, true or false? Sorry to be so long. These are just some of the things that concern me & I like to get another opinon. Thank's much, Jim.

Just had a new windshield put in mine. Same situation, new paint and all. The guy put what he called a "primer" on both the window and the frame. It was black and REALLY runny. He said it was $65 a bottle his cost. (about 4 oz to a bottle) and had a round dobber attached to the lid. He then laid a triangle shaped bead of the urethane caulking and let it set for a minute or so, then lowered the glass onto the frame. With the blackout border on the glass, it looks great (but not original) And if it breaks, my insurance will pay to get another one.

No worrys with Urethane set glass stress cracking later. Most all newer autos and trucks are urethane set and the windshields are a major part in the structural integrity of the body. Most quality urethane adheasives are designed to be used as a two or three part componet system. Such as primer/cleaner and urethane. I would purchase a componet system designed to work together, such as Sika. Also scuff sand the pinchweld, the urethane may not adhere properly to the clear. On the installs I've done have all been urethane, I don't use the butyl at all. With a good straight, centered trianglular bead 3/8 to 7/16" high is all that is necessary. I also use glass setting cups to keep the goo off of my fingers. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
just my .02 good luck

Thank's for the reply fellow's. I went to a cruise nite last nite& checked out 2 A bodies convs.that had been urethaned. Owners were happy with job & no problems with cracks. I located a 4oz bottle of 3m primer $9, but not cleaner yet.The glass guy only has lg. expensive bottles. I'll work it out. Thanks again for the input, Jim
