was into my 540 for a solid roller change and a new top end . last summer this got freshened up with all new bearings and rings and a light hone with a 320 grit dingle ball hone . this is what i found after about 400 miles max if that . money is tight right now so what do you guys think run it or rebuild it ?? its a gen 6 block at 4.500 now might go 4.560 maybe . what do you all think. clicking this pic will enlarge it.
yes you can grab the gouge with your finger nail.

Ouch,
Ring gaps too tight ? Detonation ? What does the piston look like ? I suppose you cpuld hone it and run it for a while, but I doubt if tge rings will last very long on that cylinder. They will probably rotate around to where the groove is, get hung there and end up making it worse sooner or later. You really need to figure out what caused it.

yeah im thinkin yank that hole in the mornin . on just a best guess im thinkin due to the usage and the 3500 rpm with 4 10 gears that it happened like rightafter fire up cause its fairly smooth around the edges and i have driven maybe 400 miles tops and i have been know to be a lil over agressive on the throttle a bit to often for most and most of all my hone marks are gone so im curious to see myself . will update after i pull that cylinder. yawn im so tired i been goin on this camaro now for 4 years i want to drive . lol

after closer inspection the short lil dark line you see is actually a huge crack in the cylinder. since i have a callies crank carillo rods and a fairly fresh set of j&e pistons im hoping i can find a shop willing to work with my parts finish a brand new block to install my rotating assembly with new bearings and rings. most of the shops in my area dont want to work with loose parts even if you buy a block from them so now the search for such a shop is in progress

Seems kinda silly for a shop to not want to do that kind of work IMO

You are in CA, why don't you contact Mike Lewis aka Wolfplace. You are fortunate enough to be in the same state , I bet there are many here that wish they were within a state or two. He will be able to take care of you.

What caused it to crack like that?? Detonation maybe? Overbored?

i dont think thats a crack anymore it looks like a small gouge . when lookin at it with a magnafine glass its like a small scratch that you could catch a piece of paper in barley.. the angle of the pic makes it look worse.
