I Am Trying To Get The Timing Set On The Gm 350 Ho Crate Motor #12486041, Using The #6272221 6.75” Damper, And Timing Pointer #12342000 (which I Mounted To The Drivers Side Of The Timing Cover). But When I Bring Cylinder #1 To Tdc, The Timing Mark On The Damper Is At The Top Of The Damper, Not Anywhere Near To The Timing Pointer. Does Anyone Have Any Advise? The Parts That I Used Are What Is Recommended To Be Used With The Crate Motor, But Nothing Lines Up. I Have Timed It By Ear And It Runs Ok, But I Can’t Use The Timing Light. Thanks - Patrick

try to set it at 10' BTDC @ 700. that's what GM Perf recommends. Your pointer and dampener look to be correct. Double check that the distributor is dropped correctly just to make sure you have a good starting point. Also check to see that plug wires aren't moved one space over-I had one like that, it ran, but not well. also, disconnect the vacuum line when timing.
Probably much more experienced guys here will add more...

If you want to set thr timing easily-pull #1 plug..use a bump switch-rotate the engine until you feel the compression on your finger. check the mark on the pulley. Sounds strange-but it works. You could have a wire in the cap wrong.

You have the wrong pointer. The late model SB's have a long water pump and the timing mark is straight down behind the W/P.
