I am near ready to paint my car and am test fitting the new front clip before paint. I had heard that the only option to NOS fenders were the second tooling run of Goodmarks, but these things fit like $*#@! I am sure they are the new ones, but they don't line up at all. I can get all of the bolts started but then it touches the door at the bottom and starts to bend all out of whack. Any suggestions, or experiences like this? Thanks Jim Oh yeah, my car has never been hit and the doors have never been moved.

Had a similar fit problem on a friends '70 with a first generation G-mark fender. He called them and was told that there was a problem with them and that as soon as they tooled up for the new ones, they would send him one free of charge. In this case, "free of charge" meant that he would have to pay a second time to have the new one painted and then install it without being compensated for it.

I don't understand why G-mark would have let the fenders out the door and continued selling them, knowing that they didn't fit properly.

Sorry to hear your having such a bad fit issue. The word was, that the new 2nd tooling run would fit better.
A fellow TC'er in UT use them with good results.
Hitting at the bottom !
MARTINSR posted a great overview and plan of attack a few weeks back.
If the door was not removed and the Jam and rocker panel gap is correct. The next area of attention is the front fender /door gap.

You made no mention of body line ?
Did you bolt the fender to the rad support ?
Keep everthing LOOSE. I somtines use bailing wire to loosely attach the front of the fenders to the rad support. The rad support has it bolts/nuts just started. ( to keep the rad support bushings from falling off the crossmember) The pay attention to the body line and door/fender gap.
You may have to elongate the bottom fender hole to line up the bottom body/cowl cage nut. ( make sure the nut that's inside the cowl has the ability to move around inside it's cage.) The lower nut not only moves the panel in and out, but also help maintain the curature of the lower fender.

USMUSL - I too have a 70 and I first bought from NPD, now THEY just dont fit! They didnt follow the shape of the door so it looked real bad.

I just got some new fenders from Goodmark and the contour is great and fits the door pretty good. When I went to finish the install I couldnt get them to fit, at all. If I bolted it to the radiator support it would bow out at the bottom by the door and likewise, if I bolted it to the bottom of the rocker it would stick several inches above the radiator support. Me and Goodmark was freaked, we could not for nothing figure out what was going on. So after several days of being incredably frustrated I tried it again... I dropped the car to the floor off the lift and the fenders fit perfectly! I lifted the car again and it wouldnt fit again. It turned out that while on the lift it would let the front end sag and nothing would line up.

So, if you're on a lift or have it on jack stands put it down on all fours and try it.

BTW, these Goodmark fenders are constructed FAR better then the ones from NPD, the metal is far thicker and the fenders weigh a good deal more, it's obvious their better.

Car was sitting on the floor. The top mounting tab that fastens the fender behind the door was apparently positioned too far out. When it was pulled up tight to the body, the fender was too far in at the top. When it was shimmed to align the fender with the door, the tab hit the door when the door was closed. There just didn't seem to be a way to make it work without cutting and re-welding the tab.

Also, the curve of the fender was not the same as the curve of the door. Still no way to make it work without modifications.

I guess there's nothing like the real thing.

Like Lee said I can get all the back bolts started and the front wont even come close or vice versa. The car did have one flat tire though! I will try again tonight and see what happens, as I have heard nothing but good things about the new ones and the appearance is top notch. I let you guys know what happens, thanks for all the input Jim
