I have a 1971 Chevelle, replaced wiring dash harness and replaced horn relay. Checked wire from relay to horn, checked wires on relay, and have power there, and also checked the horn itself. It works if you run it to a 12 volt source. The old relay had numbers on the terminals I didn't install the new relay which also has numbers. The horn doesn't work no matter how I wire it. If anyone can give me an idea of where to go or what i am doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any diagrams that I might be able to use. Also pulled off steering wheel and checked contact.

You are not making ground somewhere after you push the horn button. Have you checked the horn wire in your steering wheel? If the little spring-loaded contact is gone it will not ground. There is also a small ground wire in your rag joint which is for your horn ground.

I just ordered a complete horn kit for the steering wheel. I took the wheel off today, and I didn't see the spring you were talking about. If you can, do you know where the spring goes???

Thanks
Mike

The first link takes you to a paper that goes through a step by step analysis of the horn circuit. It is generic for nearly all GM vehicles in the 1969-1970's time frame.

Since I have no idea as to when your horn ceased to function, you could try jumping across your flexible coupling with a wire. Or just go from the steering shaft to a bare steel part on the frame, body, etc. Some replacement flex couplings and most of the rebuild "kits" fail to provide a ground path across the rubber isolating disc.

BTW, I updated the Horn Diagnosis paper to include the flexible coupling. Note that the Revision Date is now 13JN06.

Good luck,
Jim

Thanks a lot for your help. I received the info, but the pictures wouldn't come through. Is there any way you can send them again?

Thanks Again,
Mike
