As I was prepping the fedner wells for paint, I noticed something I thought was a little odd... The passenger side inner fender is metal and the drivers side is plastic? I'm sure they didn't come like that but how hard is it to swap one or both out? I've got plenty of room with the motor out but I really don't want to get too involved with it...

I would take this golden opportunity to change them NOW with the motor out.I would also pull the fender to change the wheel well. The driver side is the easy one to do(no batt tray)IMHO I would go with the metal well. The only wells you can get now are VERY crappy to fit and it's easier to work the hole alignment with the fender off! Also you can bet the bolts have rusted even in AZ.I known others will disagree about taking the fender off,but trust me,It'll save you alot of skinned knuckles and bad language.
Good luck with that

its not hard to change one or both, there are alot of bolts to the fender & a couple to the firewall area

It is actually somewhat common for the cars to be found this way. I see it mostly on Baltimore cars as they commonly did it. However normally the battery side was plastic.

Yeah, my '72 is that way. On the '70 both are plastic...by choice.

Probably to resist the battery acid.
