: What is this?
66 Buick Special Jun 11th, 06, 9:15 PM I'm assuming that it is a fuse or relay of some kind but have no idea for sure what it does.
It has Littelfuse Inc(not a typo) stamped in the top.
This is on my '66 Special.
A local guy has a '66 Chevelle and a '67 Skylark and he says neither of his cars have it on them.
Any idea's?http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/medium/what_is_this.jpg

I have no idea. does the cover come off? Where do the wires go? How many terminals on it. Is there a part# stamped on it? Try searching http://www.littelfuse.com under obsolete parts if you have a part#
Dean Jun 11th, 06, 11:40 PM An automatic resetting circuit breaker would be my guess.
66 Buick Special Jun 12th, 06, 12:00 AM Well here is the inside and plug side views. There is no part number on it.
The yellow/grn stripe wire goes to the right side firewall plug as you look at it from the front of the car. It goes to the second pin down on the left side of that connector.
There are several green wires in that part of the harness and I didn't feel like pulling all the electrical tape off of everything tonight. Tomorrow I'll dive into it some more.

undee70ss Jun 12th, 06, 1:01 AM Its a relay of some sort. Looks like it has 4 terminals although 2 are conmmon. I don't have a 66 wiring diagram, but here are some for a 65

Does the car have any options, (convertible, power windows, air, 4 speed? ect...)
66 Buick Special Jun 12th, 06, 4:50 PM Thanks for your help!
I'll check it out again when I get home from work.
I love electrical...

jonh Jun 13th, 06, 12:40 PM I think that is a TCS switch. If I'm correct it is controlled by the transmission and prevents the vacuum advance from working at certain times through a vacuum solonoid. It's purpose was to control emissions. Not all engines had this type of smog control. I think I'm correct. Hope this helps. Jon
66 Buick Special Jun 13th, 06, 7:09 PM Hi Jon,
That may be possible. Since the Buick tranny is no longer in the car and the plug had only 2 of the 4 wires connected, it certainly could have just been unplugged when they switched to the Chevy motor and trans.
Someone else messaged me that it might have had something to do with the kick down for the Buick 2sp tranny.
I have run the car now without it and all seems well, I think I'm going to remove the wiring to clean up a little more of the electrical. :)
Thanks!
Greg
undee70ss Jun 13th, 06, 7:27 PM I think that is a TCS switch.
I don't think it would for TCS as that came out in later yrs. Did your car have a auto? I am not all up and up on Buicks but I know that some early yrs have a switch pitch converter (basicly a converter with 2 stall speeds) Could be for that. Just a guess though. Try searching a Buick board.
jonh Jun 13th, 06, 9:27 PM Greg: If the trans has been changed I would definately get rid of it not that you have to. There should also be other wires and hoses you can remove. Sounds as if your are having fun. Keep going and enjoy. Jon
66 Buick Special Jun 14th, 06, 12:04 AM Thanks guys I appreciate all of your help and educated guesses! :p
Jon I AM having a blast! (except for figuring out some of the wiring! )
What is even more fun is watching my 11 yr old son (and my 8yr old son to a lesser extent) getting into working on the car! We spent 4 1/2 hrs Saturday night fab'ing and installing the mounts and front seats with Grandpa. Sunday about 5:00pm my 11 yr old comes up to me and asks if there is anything else we can do to the Buick before he had to go back to his moms at (6:00). I told him that I didn't think we'd have time for anything... he looked so disappointed I decided it was time to install the high beam dimmer switch.
Luckily I had you guys to help me with what wires went where! Before he left he learned how to install crimp connectors and we had the switch working.
The point being, not only have I suceeded in getting him to help, I may have created a monster!
That reminds me... the body ground still needs replacing!
Thanks again guys!!!
Greg
jlaf Jun 22nd, 06, 7:26 PM Sorry I was away during this discussion. This mystery device is your horn relay. I'm surprised folks were stumped.
Replacements are available at chain auto parts stores for $5. I fried my 40 year old one two years ago while working on the steering column.

What fooled me was the fact that there were only two wires on it. :(
