I have a pair of front bumper guards for a '66 that are a bit rusty on the backside. Unfortunately, one of them rusted all of the way through to a pin hole on the front. I'm sure it will be a little worse when ground down and cleaned up. My question is, can these be repaired and rechromed? I was planning on re-chroming anyway. How should I go about fixing it? Do I just weld it up and grind it down? Thank You in advance.

Looking forward to getting my cars restification to the point where I don't have to answer the question "What is it?" anymore!

You take them to the replaters and they do whats needed. They will ususally grind out all the rust and weld up the holes and take out any dents. Even if you can weld them yourself I would let them do it. A quality shop will dip it in chemicals before and after welding and plating that will prevent further rusting.

Not much to add, like Jeff said, let the PROs handle it...they really do good work with this stuff. Mine were redone at KNOXVILLE CHROME and turned out Great!

Thanks for the reply's. I kinda figured they would do this as part of the plating service, but I wanted to be sure. The rust is really not too bad and I could return the guards if I wanted to, but these are hard to find and I was planning to replate them anyway.

Tom, for what it's worth.....AUSLEY's Chevelles is coming out with reproduction Front and rear Guards for 66 Chevelle in Late April, supposed to be nice from what Roger said. Of course they will not be cheap either ( I don't know price) but then sometimes by the time you pick up used ones, rechrome, etc...six in one.....it will be nice to see the E-bay prices and Carlisle prices take a hit with repros available, prices are out of line these days.

Just a thought thought,

Mike, I knew about the bumper guards through Ausley's. I sent them an email inquiring as to when they were expecting to get them in but I never got a response. Their website says they were expecting them in late 2000.

Yeah, they got back logged....I spoke with Roger Ausley about a month ago and he was shooting for late April 01!
