Hi!

I was wondering if someone could tell me the correct color/s to use for my '70 SS El Camino drive shaft? I think it's supposed to be some shade of black with color bands. I've found what looks like three color bands near the middle. The colors seem to be orange, yellow and green, but I could be wrong. It looks like someone tried to paint over them with black. I tried to remove some of the paint/grime and these are the colors I've noticed. Is there an easy way to remove just the top/black paint leaving the colors below?

I think this has been discussed before, but I can't do a search at this time. Search engine seems to be down...

Try rubbing the area over the stripes with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner. If you go slowly you should be able to remove the black paint before you completely remove the underlying color stripes well enough to at least determine what colors they are. That overlying black paint may have preserved the stripes so it's kind of like a blessing in disguise!
