First off i just wanted to say hi, and that i just brough my first chevelle today. It's a 68 SS coupe. To keep this a tech thread, i was wondering if ya'll could help me understand the 400 auto tranny that my car has. I know nothing about chevelle's, i'm usually a ford guy. So any info like, what's it usually used for, how much power can it handle, is it a good tranny?? Thanks in advanced everyone.

And mod's if this needs to be moved then i apologize.

Welcome to our addiction!! You will probably get more responses in the transmission forum but from listening to the experts, the TH400 is almost bulletproof. I've never had an automatic so I don't know the little details but there are guys in the trans forum that are resident experts. Enjoy your chevelle:D

TH400 should be good up to 450 hp. It is in my opinion one of the best transmissions GM ever built. Welcome and good luck with your ride. Post up some pics if you can.

Welcome, and after a few posts you may (will) be an addict like the rest of us! :)
I think the TH400 was rated for 400 lb-ft of torque at its inception, hence its name...may want to check in on the Transmission Forum for more info.

Thanks everyone for the help. And don't worry i'm already addicted. I just love old muscle cars so i'm basically in heaven right now. I found out some good stuff about the TH400 so i'm happy. Thanks again for the help.

I assume everyone is stating the th400 stock power handling. They can handle way more than that if built right. I'm running 500+ hp and 560+ tq through mine.

POST SOME PICS OF THE NEW RIDE!!!!

The TH400 can be rebuilt fairly inexpensively to handle in excess of 600 HP/TQ. A 68 SS is one of the best of the Chevelles only the 69 SS is better looking.....

Hey Copper 68:
Welcome aboard........ Like the guy's are saying the TH400 is almost bullet-proof, I'm running a TH400(w/shift-kit) behind my 383 stroker that has around 425HP and a ton of torque and haven't had a problem. Tell us more about your Chevelle........ I love the '68s, the thin taillights give it style ;).

P.S. I've been a Chevy-man for years, But the fastest car I ever owned was powered by a '69 Ford 428 super cobra jet ram-air engine.

I vote for TH400 with Gear Vendor Overdrive for big block.
