I just finished some priming with a conventional siphon gun. This is my first time at this and it came off OK but I used a LOT of primer. About a half gallon on two fenders, a hood, the trunk interior and trunk lid. Are hvlp guns really that more efficient? I'm thinking about picking one up.

Maybe I should look into a brush. You can work faster with a roller though...

I just started using an HVLP and I can say they really do limit overspray. They put the paint on the surface and not in the air. Definately worth the investment. How much are you spending on a gallon of primer now?

I suggest a gravity feed HVLP gun. A primer quality gun should only cost around $50 - $80. (A quality color gun will run over $200, many over $350.) Use a two part primer-sealer also.

I spent about $100 on a gallon of primer, (Transtar ez-sand) the activator, a gallon of thinner and some odds and ends. I just picked up an HVLP gravity feed gun on sale for $50. It's purple. Gonna try it out this weekend. I did hook up the regulator, set it at 10 psi (recommended on the paint can) and played with it. I did notice that my compressor didn't cycle. The thing that I noticed is that you can't set it down like the siphon gun.

What's the difference in the big-time guns and the home-store variety? I looked at a Sata in a magazine. A little high for this backyard dude http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

A Sata NR-95 HVLP is expensive, but you won't believe how much better it is than anything out there. All the paint manufacturers recommend it. You won't be sorry.

I agree SATA makes a great gun but the NR95 is like last years computer, the NR2000 is the hot ticket.

Hoffman, the 10PSI is at the cap, not at the gun. And to measure at the cap you need a special cap. It is really only for HVLP compliance. The gun you are using is a SATA copy I believe and the SATA requires 29 PSI at the gun to produce the 10 at the cap.

Here are some tips on gun setup
