: Best Mufflers??
mateochevelle Jun 9th, 06, 9:45 PM I have a 72 chevelle with an H pipe in the back and was wondering what the best (highest HP gains) mufflers are? Being a teenager, I also want them to be loud, of course. A friend of mine has Flowmaster series ten mufflers for sale, but I have never heard of them...Thanks for the input...
erikbuzz Jun 9th, 06, 11:22 PM For freeflowing LOUD exhaust, go with Flowmaster 40 series.
THEL78ISGREAT Jun 10th, 06, 12:19 AM For an exhaust that sounds like everyone elses go with 40 series Flowmasters. For a really loud sound go with glass packs or chambered exhaust that is factory from Chevy.
Chevy 70 SS vert Jun 10th, 06, 12:22 AM Flowmasters are probably the best selling muffler out there, I think. If you haven't heard of them go check them out. 40 series will get you what you need. I also believe that these 40 series mufflers make more power, than others.
Slick71ss Jun 10th, 06, 12:30 AM If you just want loud, Flowmaster original 40's.
If you want loud with a free flowing high HP muffler, check out Pypes Violators.
Here's what they sound like on my car... http://media.putfile.com/Chevelle-with-Violator-mufflers

stay away from the 1-chambers,,,too much like a glasspack,,,i had them on my 69 chevelle,,,tooo loud,,,go with a set of MAC Flowpath mufflers,,,they are louder and have a better sound than Flowmasters,,
theclencher Jun 10th, 06, 2:07 AM That's right- it's in the Teen Behavior Code Book, which must be obeyed. Rule #1 is you have to be obnoxious; there is no alternative.
chev65elleSS Jun 10th, 06, 2:25 AM I remember seeing a chart for the best flow of all the muffler manufactures last year. I remember Borlas, Magnaflows, Spin Tech, and Flow Tech Warlocks(uncapped) being at the top of that list, and Dynomax, Flowmaster delta flows in the middle, and I think near the bottom were the Edelbrocks, Hooker Aero chambers and the original flowmasters.
Even though Flowmaster are built well, they're old technology, except for the race series ones. Like some people say, "in with the new, out with the old"
I here good things about Dynomax and Dyno Tech w/o the expensive price.
gotago Jun 10th, 06, 2:48 AM The magnaflows are pretty loud at high rpms but more mellow at cruise. Since you're a teenager, I imagine your tunes are important too. If you want to hear your tunes when your cruising, you probably won't like the flows. Of course you could probably fix that with a monster amp............................;)
00WS6TA Jun 10th, 06, 8:57 AM I really like my Hooker AeroChambers - 3" all the way out the back and it sounds very nice. :)
THEL78ISGREAT Jun 10th, 06, 12:39 PM Well im a teenager but I dont like the loud noise that sounds like the pipes are too big. I heard a sound clip from the Dynomax Hemi Turbos the other day and was very impressed. My ideal mufflers would be a set of Hush Thrushes.
Xune Jun 10th, 06, 1:48 PM Ive got dual flowmaster 40's on 2 1/2 with an H pipe on my 71. I really enjoy the sound. its pretty mellow at idle and cruise, but everyone around knows when your on it.

Here ya' go.

JC70SS Jun 10th, 06, 3:21 PM Slick71,
What cam do you have in your 502?
GCole Jun 10th, 06, 3:58 PM I sure like my Ultraflows. 3" through the muffler 2 1/2 tailpipes. A bit loud when on it, mellow when crusin.
mateochevelle Jun 10th, 06, 5:18 PM Thanks for all the input...anyone ever run the new super series 40s? theyre coated black. I havent heard much talk about them.
Slick71ss Jun 10th, 06, 5:26 PM Slick71,
What cam do you have in your 502?
It's the GM ZZ502 stock cam.
Camshaft, Lift (I/E) : 0.527" / 0.544"
Camshaft Duration @ 0.050" I/E : 224 / 234
I think the stock cam is perfect for a street car that might see an occasional trip to the track. If I were running at the track all the time, that might warrant a cam upgrade as well as a few other things.

Yep, ran them on my car for about 20min. Didn't like them. Too quiet for a Flowmaster and sounded too echoed for me. Here's the sound clip of Super 40's on my car...

Hey, if you want your car to be loud, and don't want that trendy Flowmaster sound, get yourself some Spin Techs  Either that, or get yourself an X pipe and run the car str8 pipe with no mufflers :p :D :D :D
chev65elleSS Jun 10th, 06, 6:52 PM I second the Spin Techs, I have them, Very throaty and deep sounding
thunderstruck507 Jun 10th, 06, 7:04 PM i have Flowtech Terminators, I think theyre nice...something different
i was at a car show and my dad could tell when i started my car just because its something not everyone has
there is a sound file on theyre site
i hate the sounds of packed mufflers and wanted something not everyone had, i am happy with my choice but wish i would have got 2.5" anyway
