: OT - GM SUV's/Trucks with daytime running light burning out
69-CHVL Jun 9th, 06, 6:45 PM My '01 Tahoe goes through the daytime running light too much. Is there a reason for this? I may need to break out the VOM and check for bad grounds or excess voltage.
You see it all the time - a GM product going down the road with a light out
sinned Jun 9th, 06, 7:12 PM I manage a fleet of around 100 GM trucks...they all lose a bulb every 6 months or so. Think about it, the lights run almost anytime the vehicle is in motion. That is a lot of running hours.
Hal_396 Jun 9th, 06, 9:01 PM I'd check and see if they have a LED replacment for those things. If there isn't one available there should be.
69 Daytona Yellow 3 Speed Jun 9th, 06, 11:14 PM Dont know if it works on your year but if you lightly, i mean lightly press down on the E BRAKE your lights will go out. The down fall is your e brake light in the dash stays on.......

GetMore Jun 9th, 06, 11:27 PM 3157 is the bulb number. There is an LED replacement.
sinned Jun 9th, 06, 11:30 PM Actually the part number is a 4157, but the 3157 is a more common replacement. The LED conversion bulbs for the 3157 design are not typically a very well built product.
Alwhite00 Jun 10th, 06, 6:30 AM My 00 GMC has the orig lights in it. (now they will probabally burn out)

Xtreme70SS396 Jun 10th, 06, 9:13 AM My 90k mile '00 Olds also has originals. I haven't really noticed the problem around here.
chevelless502 Jun 10th, 06, 9:50 AM I agree, i see tons of them that way. I have owned 2 of the nbs trucks and bout every 3 months they go out. The connectors on all of them i have seen are black, like they get too hot. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

saturnstyl Jun 10th, 06, 10:04 AM They are not continuous duty bulbs, and yet are in a continuous duty application. I used sylvania long life bulbs, and never had to replace another.
snydes Jun 10th, 06, 11:02 AM I've seen so many of those out in trucks I started to wonder if they were only supposed to have one on. Good grief.
sinned Jun 10th, 06, 11:09 AM The biggest problem is that they will not illuminate unless the vehicle is in drive without the parking brake on...it makes it pretty difficult for the average driver to even know they are out or not. The only way to check is to have someone else hold the vehicle with the regular brakes (or do it my which I highly discourage and stand in front of the vehicle in gear with no one holding the brake, using a block in front of the wheels).
Bill Pritchard Jun 10th, 06, 3:25 PM ......or you can do as I did on my 02 Tahoe as soon as I drove it home from the dealer - pull the fuse and drive without them. They never burn out that way and you don't look stupid running around with only one lit
I'm lucky if I get six months out of each bulb in my o1 Tahoe. I leave spares in the glove box.
Dennis, the easy way to see the bulbs that are out is to look for the reflection on the vehicle in front of you at a stop light. Pickup tailgates are good for this.

If only...
I have a Trailblazer that uses the low beam headlights as the damned DRLs. You can't pull the fuses or the low beams don't work.
GM arrogance at work. But at least they're going bankrupt. Do you suppose that ****ing off your customers might lead to financial disaster? Maybe they should do a twenty-year study to find out.
69-CHVL Jun 10th, 06, 7:08 PM OK, just put the VOM on there to see if anything is going on...
14.1v between the leads, 14.3 from the hot wire to battery ground. I did a resistance check for the ground wire to the batt neg, about 1.0-1.3 ohms. Only I didn't do was rev up the motor...couldn't b/c teh trans has to be in gear for the lights to come on!
Sound OK?
LeoP Jun 11th, 06, 9:01 PM I have replaced one light socket and one bulb in my 02 1500HD, lots of em at work though, the bulbs that is. the canyon/colorado take a 3757 bulb, the tangs are different.
SuperChevy402 Jun 11th, 06, 9:55 PM I've often wondered why all the GM trucks and SUV's I see have been running around Popeye'd for the last few years.
