: SS Stripe Question (again)

My 70 SS originally came with a vinyl top (C08 option). D88 hood stripes were mandated in the Z25 SS package. My question is as follows: Do the stripes stop at the end of the trunk lid or do they extend up to and beyond the C08 stainless trim? From what I have discovered from my research of this topic, the stripes end at the trunk lid and so not extend beyond that up to and under the vinyl trim up towards the rear window. Any agreement on this statement?

I've not seen one 70-72 True SS that had the stripes stop at the deck lid. The GM assy manual shows the stripes up to and under the window trim. Every 70-72 I've painted has been done this way. If by chance I'm wrong, then I'm way off base. Can you show some documentation as to what is officially correct. All my looking says up to the window.

All the 70-72s that I've seen, the stripes extend past the deck lid and disappear under the stainless rear window trim.

Thanks for the replies. Please understand that my SS came with the vinyl top option. The assembly manual mentions that the stripes end at the end of the trunk when this option is present. Also, the Chevelle SS restoration manual also states on page 140: "On coupes with a vinyl top (C08), the stripes should end at the lid opening", although this author's work has been scrutinized by some regarding other aspects of Chevelle restorations. Since my car had been painted at some time (a real ugly orchid color BTW without the stripes), I cannot tell if the stripes actually crossed over passed the deck lid over to the rear portion of the body panel on up towards the window channel. I don't believe they did. If anyone has a bone stock Chevelle (or one that has ben accurately restored) with both the C08 and D88 options, please provide some information to clear up this confusion. I would really appreciate it.

Good project goin on there. Looks like my 70 did 2 years ago. Check out the pics at my site. As soon as I get the rest of the restoration pictures scanned I'll throw them on the site. www.angelfire.com/ky2/mycars (http://www.angelfire.com/ky2/mycars)

Super 70 you raise a very good question. I read the same entry about the stripes in the Assembly Manual and in the SS Restoration Guide. As the original owner of my car I strongly believe my car came with the stripes all the way to the vinyl top trim but I'm not positive since my car was repainted in the mid 70's and then again in the 80's and again in 1999.
When I repainted my car in 1999 I did not extend the stripes past the trunk and it just doesn't look right. I have talked to people at shows who will argue both ways.

So bottom line is, NOT SURE !!!

My 70 had the factory paint and vinyl top on it when I had it painted in 1986. The stripe went all the way to the top trim.

Thanks Guys!! All of you say that the stripes continue up to and under the vinyl. I can understand this, but the assy manual says stops at the trunk lid. There is no cancellation of the sheet in the assy manual indicating that the stripes should NOT continue on past the trunk lid for the C08 option. So what gives? Did the factory painters ignore the fact that the stripes should end at the trunk lid and paint them all the way up to the window channel? After trying to visualize the stripes ending at the trunk lid and also continuing on over to the rear window, it might be best to go with each of your conclusions - continue stripe up to the rear window. Also for you early 70 car owners (pre-Apr 70), what stripe dimensions did you use as there are two dimensions that were used. Hoping to get a few more opinions on this.... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

My October '69 Motor Trend article clearly shows a '70 SS with the C08 option with the stripes going up to and under the trim. I have never seen it any other way with or without a vinyl top. I know of other survivor cars I have documented that were exactly that way also. They also showed overspray (for us anal restorers) in the lid opening area and not a clean mask.

Regarding your question as to which stripe dimensions to use, unless you are building a serious show car I would use the late 70-72 stripes. They look much better. That's why they changed them.
